moving to killeen
i'll be moving to killeen city in august as i'll be pursuing my graduate studies at the tarleton state university (central texas). i am 22 years of age and i've never been in texas before. i'm a little nervous about the fact that it's really hot there and i can't stay under the sun for a long time. i also found out that killeen has a higher crime rate as compared to many other texas cities. should i stay close to my university or look for a house in nearby cities? i have a car so i presume that commuting won't be a big problem.
another campus i can pursue this course is at stephenville, but since it's a very small city i opted for killeen.
what should i do? should i go to stephenville instead since it seems like a better city, except the fact that it's very very small. please help.

I would opt for Stephenville long before Killeen.Killeen is the location of the largest military base in the world,(or so I have heard Ft. Hood called),with all the inherent problems that brings.Stephenville is a pretty town that is close enough to Ft. Worth for easy day trips in to shop and eat.My wife was there yesterday,since one of our doctors moved there.He loves it there,btw.The main campus of Tarleton is also in Stephenville.One of the best barbeque places in Texas is just down the road in Brownwood,called Underwoods.
For me it would be a no brainer going to Stephenville.

Go to Stephenville, Tarleton in Killeen is one small building adjacent to Central Texas College. Killeen has super high crime rate. The town is ugly and ran down. Believe me you will not like Killeen,, Nothing but Military, ( army) so you have alot of gang type activity. and no one cares about the area, because they are not going to settle there.

Army = gangs????
Tuck,
I won't disagree with your statement on Killeen. However, your statement
"Nothing but Military, ( army) so you have alot of gang type activity", misaligns our military and associating the army as being a bunch of gang members is not cool. Sure, there is a few bad apples in the military (as with any other types of civilian organizations, but that doesn't make them all bad. Remember, they are the ones protecting our country.

Yall are makin it sound like Killeen is full of crime....and that the Army is part of it....I dont agree with that. No matter where you go, there will always be crime. I grew up in a town of 6000, here in Texas and we had gangs and crime (Murders etc) & it was no where near a Mil town. So dont blame the military for crime. I went to school in South Austin at St. Edwards, and lived in south Austin for a while. Everyone told me it was bad and horrible and that the crime was bad, but I didnt have any problems. Go to school where you want to. If you feel that unsafe somewhere, buy a dog or a gun. Remember it is legal to have both in a house.

live on post. unless you want to live way out in the country and rent a trailer for dirt cheap, all the property management companies rent apts/houses for market value (e.g. BAH)..they KNOW how much BAH active duty members get, and they max out the rent cuz they know they can get it. dont know what the waiting list, if any, for post housing is, and you KNOW that you will have to be married to live on post, and you will have to be married to get married BAH.

i agree with all the posters who defended Killeen. though i personally would NOT live in Killeen (except for the area near the airport, or some areas bordering Copperas Cove or Harker Heights), Killeen is full of lots of good folks.
however, if i had to choose between going to Tarleton in Killeen or Stephenville, it would be Stephenville hands down-i love that city, and it's cowboy capitol of Texas! big rodeo town! thats where Ty Murray and Jewel hang their hat!
