The actual test is in two parts, one written, the other driving. You just walk right into the DMV office pay $24, fill out a form or two, and take the written test. Once you pass the written test, you take the driving test in your (or a borrowed friend/relative's) car. When you pass that portion of the test, you are issued a little white piece of paper as a temporary proof of license until Austin mails you your real license.
You will need to show a Social Security Card, a genuine or certified copy of your birth cirtificate and some form of photo identification to take the test. Have these things with you and ready.
As far as being nervous is concerned, find some place where you will not get in trouble for driving with out a license, and practice until you feel comfortable enough to take the test. Parallel parking will probably be your biggest problem, so practice the procedure until it becomes second nature.
It is not a hard test, most of it is common sense. However, I have learned that common sense is really not all that common. There are questions on the test that require you to know the actual measurements for distances and speeds under certain circumstances. So make sure you pick up a handbook at the DMV and study it before taking the written and driving portions of the test.
This test is realtively easy to pass. If you want something to worry about and take your mind off the nervousness of the regular drivers license test, then get a Class A CDL with HazMat, Double/Triples, Air Brakes, and Tanker endorsements.
