$500,000 could buy a house and acreage here - in some cases, LOTS of acreage.
Or a very fancy house. Or a VERY fancy condo.

Hey, thanks for coming over and entertaining us...

Yep, a place I am PERFECTLY happy to live. I've got a GREAT life, family all close by, easy to get any where in the world to visit & explore, great business, great schools, etc. I'd say we are doing just fine Many people including those residing in California would be envious to have our life. We don't have to work two jobs to afford a nice place to live in an area w/ great schools. Mom can stay home, we can afford to go on great vacations, etc. LOVE IT!!!!

I hope you know I was just pulling his leg.
As for the substantive quality of life comparison, I just think it's different for different people. It depends on what kind of priorities you have. I am fortunate to not have to worry financially about living in CA, and I love my life here. There are many reasons why I would not want to live in TX, but they are my own personal reasons - not by any means a final judgment on TX. You are correct in saying that many people in CA would envy such a life in TX - indeed, there are parts of CA I would not want to live in. If I had to choose between Bakersfield and Dallas for example, the choice is easy.
I also realize many cannot sustain the life they want here in CA, even if they would rather be here. Hence some of the grumpy Californians you may encounter in TX. When you move somewhere, you have to adapt. If I had to move to TX, I would constantly want to change it, and that's not really fair. So I wouldn't.

Pulling my leg? You mean the compliment wasn't sincere?

I am so jealous of you who do live in Texas. I love it there and only wich I could move to Texas and I would never leave. I am in Alabama. My bestfriendis from Texas so I go home with her to visit her family which is like my own. I fit in with Texas so much more than I do here in Alabama....

I'm curious, what parts of Alabama and Texas ?
I've struggling with the choice of staying in Tuscaloosa, AL (where I have very deep roots, and which also happens to be one of my favorite parts of the state) or moving to San Marcos, TX (brother is there, and also happens to be about my favorite part of Texas).

I left when I was 12. Born and raised. Wouldn't mind moving back for a couple years, but would never settle permanently.
I prefer some of the other southern states such as Kentucky, Tennessee, the Carolina's, Virginia, etc. Mostly for the scenery to be really honest, and also because of the weather.
Don't get me wrong though, I love coming to Texas every year to visit family.
