Usually, it isn't wrong to end a sentence with a preposition.

Gosh, I'm too old to remember infinitives.

I repect you, CC...but are you saying because it might be "unattractive" to those who have no real clue about Texas and its history, that we should just shut 'er all down?

I don't know how many ways I can say it...but Texas is our HOME! The fact that outsiders don't like to hear about it or find it unattractive don't mean diddly damn.

I am sorry to be so blunt, but again, I just wish I could get it across that the way we Texans feel about our state is not easily understood to those who feel almost nothing for their own states.

To tell a Texan that their "pride" in their state is "misplaced" or "excessive" is akin to telling them that their family pride is screwed up.
Pride is basically referred to as a boastful attitude, a high opinion of one's own dignity, egotism, vanity, and conceit. Of course, it's also one of the seven deadly sins. Sometimes I honestly don't believe people really know what pride means because I wouldn't think anyone would want to come across as egotistical.

The word pride is unattractive to me for the reasons above. I prefer the word admire (honor, adore, regard, respect, value). When I refer to my children and their accomplishments, I always say how much I admire them. To me, the two words have very different meanings.

How does this sound? I admire my home, Texas, for all she represents whether it be her history, people, beauty, or genteel ways. I admire how she makes me feel and I admire her as my home.

I'm sorry if you or anyone else can't understand why I don't like the WORD pride, but my mom always taught be that pride is not always good and I still remember that. I know, she was just a Yankee who move to California, so what did she know? Well, my mom was one of the most intelligent and truly genteel people on the face of the Earth. I only wish that one day, I can be as delightful as she tried to teach me to be.

FYI, I know a lot about Texas history even though I didn't learn it while going to school. I worked for a school district and had to put the entire Texas history book, chapter by chapter, into a computer programming system to help the students who had trouble learning. I had to read it and make up questions for them to answer via the program in the form of games. I really enjoyed it actually, and learned a lot about Texas. Once I had it all entered in the system, I had a blast answering the questions and seeing what I knew.

Your general point about pride is well taken, but I still don't think it really applies to the attitude most of us Texans adopt when we speak of state pride or express pride in our state. There is the old stereotype of the boastful Texan (and like most stereotypes, it is rooted in reality to some degree), but we laugh about that one ourselves. That is, laugh AT ourselves...which is indicitive of that we don't always take ourselves too seriously.

I guess what I am saying is not pride does not necessarily have to translate into genuine arrogance or conceit. I don't believe most Texans are that way.

It has been my experience that the prideful attitude many yankees/transplants get irritated about comes about because the latter provoke it themselves, never realizing they do. That is, they come to Texas, immediately begin to critisize and find fault, then wonder what all the fuss is about when Texans respond. This has been discussed before. That is, what might be considered admirable frankness in some parts of the country can be considered tacky rudeness down here.

All of your just don't get it, and I just don't get all of you. After 30 years, I have a pretty good perception of what is and isn't here, but of course, I'm not a 100th generation Texan, so it's obvious we'll never agree.

Words are words and they have meanings. If you want to use pride and what it really means according to Webster, I will not slight you for it. It's just something I will not do until Texas freezes over, which will be never.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Even the best of us with manners galore "fall by the wayside" now and again. Even polite Californians who have lived in Texas 30 years falter; it's just human nature as we are not infallible.

Words are words and have meanings, but there are also nuances and contexts that can affect meaning and intent. Pride is a term/characteristic/quality which can be negative or positive.

By Webster definition, it can mean having an arrogant and unduly high opinion of ones self OR it can mean properly placed satisfaction in ones acheivements. Or the same applied to ones realm of existence (family, school, state, region, country). I take pride in being a Texan, Southerner and American, but that same pride is not being arrogant or conceited about it.

I just received this in an email from a friend of mine who actually, was from AK before moving to TX. All you REAL and PROUD Texans will beam at what it says. It's my chuckle for the day, just another reason why it's easy to see that it's hard to be humble when you're a Texan.

A little note....if Texas is the only state that is recognized by shape, this country and others are in serious trouble when it comes to geography.

Please excuse all the SIZE words; I haven't time to remove them as I'm leaving shortly for a baby shower for an upcoming little Texan.

Nice little reminder of where we come from.

Have you ever looked at a map of the world?

Look at Texas with me just for a second. That picture, with the Panhandle and the GulfCoast, and the Red River and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as anything ever will be. As soon as anyone anywhere in the world looks at it they know what it is. It's Texas! Pick any kid off the street in Japan and draw him a picture of Texas in the dirt and he'll know what it is. They will in Australia, too. What happens if I show you a picture of any other state? You might get it maybe after a second or two, but who else would? And even if you do, does it ever stir any feelings in you?

In every man, woman and child on this planet, there is a person who wishes just once he could be a real live Texan and get up on a horse or ride off in a pickup. There is a little bit of Texas in everyone.

Did you ever hear anyone go, 'Wow...so you're from Iowa? Cool, tell me about it?' Do you know why? Because no one cares about Iowa.

Texas is the Alamo. Texas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom.

We send our kids to schools named William B. Travis and James Bowie and Crockett, and do you know why? Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes.

John Wayne paid to do the movie himself. That is the Spirit of Texas.

Texas is Sam Houston capturing Santa Anna at San Jacinto.

Texas is huge forests of Piney Woods like the DavyCrockettNational Forest.

Texas is breathtaking mountains in the Big Bend.

Texas is the unparalleled beauty of bluebonnet fields in the Texas Hill Country.

Texas is the beautiful, warm beaches of the GulfCoast of South Texas.

Texas is the shiny skyscrapers in Houston and Dallas.

Texas is world record bass from places like LakeFork.

Texas is Mexican food like nowhere else, not even Mexico.

Texas is the Fort Worth Stockyards, Bass Hall, the Ballpark in Arlington and the Astrodome. (Guess now the Reliant Stadium, too)

Texas is larger-than-life legends like Michael DeBakey, Denton Cooley, Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Gene Autry, Audie Murphy, Tommy Lee Jones, Waylon Jennings, Janis Joplin, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Landry, Darrell Royal, ZZ Top, Eric Dickerson, Earl Campbell, Emmitt Smith, Nolan Ryan, Sam Rayburn, Howard Hughes, George H. W. Bush, Lyndon B. Johnson, and George W. Bush and let's not forget GEORGE STRAIT

PANTERA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Texas is great companies like Dell Computer, Texas Instruments and Compaq, Bell Helicopter and LOCKHEED MARTIN AEROSPACE, Home of the F-16 Jet Fighter and the JSF Fighter.

Texas is NASA.

Texas is huge herds of cattle and miles of crops.

Texas is home to the most amazing sunsets of gold over an empty field.

Texans have pride like no others.

Texas is hundreds of deer running around neighborhoods and fields.

Texas is skies blackened with doves and fields full of deer.

Texas is a place where towns and cities shut down to watch the local high school football game on Friday nights and for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, the Houston Texans and for a Night In Old San Antonio & the River Parade in San Antonio.

To drive across Texas is to drive 1/4 the way across the United States.

Texas is ocean beaches, deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains and prairies, and modern cities.

If it isn't in Texas, you probably don't need it.

Everything's bigger in Texas!

No one does anything bigger or better than it's done in Texas.

By federal law, Texas is the only state in the U.S. that can fly its flag at the same height as the U.S. flag. Think about that for a second. You fly the Stars and Stripes at 20 feet in Maryland, California, or Maine, and your state flag, whatever it is, goes at 17 feet. You fly the Stars and Stripes in front of Klein Oak High or anyplace else at 20 feet, the Lone Star flies at the same height - 20 feet. Do you know why? Because it is the only state that was a Republic before it became a state.

Also, being a Texan is as high as being an American down here. Our capitol is the only one in the country that is taller than the capitol building in Washington, D.C. and we can divide our state into five states at any time if we wanted to! We included these things as part of the deal when we came on. That's the best part, right there.

Texas even has its own power grid!! ... Did I mention live music capitol of the world?

If you are a REAL TEXAN, you won't even need to be told to pass this on.

The person that originally authored that email might want to look into this claim!
