Sooo, is this ANOTHER one of those "let's all jump on the bandwagon and bash Texas" threads????
You know, if you HATE the place THAT much - MOVE and NEVER come back. Do not come visit, do not come live here, do NOT buy ANYTHING produced in Texas. Hey, California and Florida - do NOT buy gas. Yeah, we have those oil platforms off of our coast. Something you pansies don't want but you sure want OUR oil. If you don't like our state and our people then why on earth do you like OUR OIL?!?!?!?! I hate for people to be in a place they so vehmently hate so much. Life is WAY TOO SHORT to go around w/ a chip (or two) on your shoulders all worked up over the way some people live that your opposed to in some way or fashion. Find a place that makes YOU happy and stay there. Hopefully it will be YOUR utopia and everyone there will be perfect and happy w/ your living amoungst them. Which is something else we have brought up before - all of these people that put down Texans and the things WE belive are flying in the face of their own beliefs of "tolerance". We are supposed to be "tolerant" of them but NO WAY are they going to be "tolerant" of us if our beliefs are in ANY WAY different than theirs. As we have said before on here numerous times - funny how those that yell the loudest for "tolerance" and how "backwards" we are can be the MOST intolerant bunch around. Hmmmm.
Anyway, y'all have fun bashing the place. Meanwhile I'll be VERY HAPPY living here in a place we call HOME and have made the best of our place in life and enjoying EVERY SECOND of it. Guess you just have to find peace within yourself to find peace in the place you live in w/in this great big world.
And you are being intolerant towards people here who bring up the negatives & give their honest opinions on Texas, even if its a non-hurtful way. Funny isn't it. Add this one to the list:
-Many Texans CANNOT take criticism. Even if its constructive criticism, how dare anyone, especially a stinking outsider, say such things about our perfect utopia we have here. So instead of talking about it in an adult manner, we just tell them to F off & not to use our oil.
Oh, and I hate to break it to you, but your comical oil remark is a bit flawed. You know there are plenty of other states that produce it rather than the almighty TX (the entire US only produces like 40% & a lot of that comes from from Alaska). Not to mention the middle east. So the chances of actually putting gas in my car in california (or wherever) that came from TX is not that great. Oil is a global market you know.
And I agree that if a person isnt happy with where they are they should move. But the thread here isnt about that. Its about some of the negatives of living in TX from current or past residents. I haven't seen anything really hurtful or overly negative here, just honest opinions. So if some you cant take the criticism & feel like lashing out at every ones giving their honest opinions, then feel free not to read through the thread. Because you're coming off as a big ignorant ass bully of a stereotype. Ain't nowhere perfect you know. And its not your alls place to come to the rescue everytime someone points out some flaws.
But the thread here isnt about that. .. Because you're coming off as a big ignorant ass bully of a stereotype... And its not your alls place to come to the rescue everytime someone points out some flaws.
Actually the thread wandered far, far away from the topic a long time ago, as most threads do around here, so please don't waste your time trying to tell anyone what the thread is about.
Furthermore, none of the Texas posters used language such as "big ignorant ass bully". It took someone from Florida to take us to that lofty level; congratulations.
Lastly, it's "us alls" place to do whatever we want to on the forum. Please, please, don't EVER try to tell us what to do. You'll only come out looking very foolish, as you have in this instance.
Wow, and I was having fun. Guess I got under someones skin eh?
Like I said.......... only those that want to jump on the "lets bash Texas and Texans" bandwagon are welcome. LOL!!!
Can we come over to the Florida or California (or any other state) site and post away ALL of the negatives we feel deserve to be aired w/o getting slammed? Nope we can't. As soon as someone from Texas does such the thread gets locked in a hurry or it turns into the "lets all dump on Texas for this moron trying to come over to OUR state site and putting us down" pile of doggy do. They don't want ANY negatives to come out about THEIR precious state. Funny ain't it.
BTW, it is also not YOUR place to come jump onto US for pointing out the positives of our great state to others.

Just got back last night, and gotta reply a bit. This post is as good as any to start. Adding first though, the Texas Pride expressed since I last read doesn't surprise me a bit. It is what I would expect of fellow Texans and just one more reason I am proud of our Great Lone Star State, and those who embrace it as such...
Now then...

Here is a newsflash. Not all of us Texans are going to roll over and play dead because the term "intolerant" is tossed around. This isn't San Francisco or Berkeley or Massachussetts where we are impressed by the latest critique word invoked. Define "intolerant" will you? Then we can discuss it.

Another newsflash. It is NOT the critisism per se. There has not been a single post on any thread I have ever seen here which makes your case that Texans (native or those who come down and become one of us) resent constructive critisism.
Hell, we do it amongst ourselves. Good gawd, Texans share the tales of blue northers, and hot, humid summers and this that and the other....
No, the resentment comes in when we encounter that sour attitude which all too often comes with it. Yeah, I call it a "yankee attitude" (however defined) where it is really NOT so constructive...but just bitter. There is a difference and it is easily recognized. To wit, continually fault-finding, scab picking...
And then? When the same do not encounter the "Texas/Southern hospitality" and acceptance we down here pride ourselves on showing our new northern neighbors? Then, the same point and say something along the lines of "It's all fake"...never even having a clue that it is their own outlook which is the reason why they are not always accepted with open arms.

Ok...I think I got it here. This thread is about negatives from those unhappy with Texas. BUT...if Texans reply in defense of our state, or counter, then "we" must be intolerant or unable to take critisism....?
One more reason I think the sub-forum of disgruntled yankees/transplants is a good one...

LMAO So says you, lecturing Texans on a Texas forum! *throws up hands in the air* I cannot even believe this remark:

What in the HELL are your credentials to lecture like this? Where are YOU from originally? With every single syllable you type, you simply re-affirm the STEREOTYPE (yeah, I can use it too) of a condecending transplant who doesn't even realize s/he is being so. So is the definition of a "bully" now that of a person doing nothing more than defending their/our home?
Texas is OUR HOME. It IS our place to take up for one another. I cannot even believe such a clueless statement as to Texas and Texans. You will never understand.
vantexan, you're painting an entire state and all of its people based on one small group.
I've run into jerks of various stripes, both conservative and liberal, in my time. Sometimes they even run in packs. However, that doesn't mean that the entire population of Texas (or any other state), or even a significant portion of it, corresponds to the way the jerks are. That would, in fact, be impossible, given the varying kinds of jerks there are out there everywhere.
These particular jerks just lived up to your particular stereotype of Texas and thus reinforced it, I suspect.
I see that you've missed my point entirely. Nowhere did I slam everyone in Texas. I clearly pointed out that I've met plenty of good people in Texas. And I'm not talking about just one small group. As I've stated, I've lived in a number of Texas cities, and it has been my experience among working class Texans that compared to other places in other states where I've lived there seems to be a much more prevalent homophobic and racist undercurrent. Not everyone, but it just seems that I've encountered it more here. And it has frustrated me. And I'll agree that it's possibly a Southern redneck thing because I did experience it in Hattiesburg, MS too.
As to why I'm here....Texas has the best economy in the country and I'm working towards my retirement. The love it or leave it comments tend to reinforce the stereotypes by the way. Don't worry, this carpetbagger will leave for Arizona eventually. It ain't perfect, nothing is, but at least most of AZ's residents are from elsewhere. You don't get tarred and feathered for being an outsider with opinions. Forgot to mention that I used to live there, know it well.

Or perhaps folks in Texas are just less hypocritical about what they/we really believe?
I know you did not direct these questions/comments at me, but I would like to reply. Bottom line is, Texas is probably not the place for you. You make a certain mistake in assuming that your definition of "racist" or "homophobic" has the currency it does in certain other parts of the country. Should we fall over backward to get all defensive about it? Hell, what IS a homophobe, anyway? Fear of man...?
Believe it or not, Texans are the most tolerant people one will ever meet. It is just that we define tolerance by time-tested standards...not what the latest New York Times editorial says we should. Tolerance is, "acceptance within specified limits." We just don't always bend to satisfy every whim that the progressive crowd says we ought....

So you love our milk and honey, but just don't like the bread it comes on, right? But ok...you are honest...and I respect that.
Anyway, the stereotypes? Stereotypes are relative to culture, naturally. And personally, if I fit the stereotype that many have of a chauvanistic Texan? As in the sense of unapologetically and unabashedly and with good reason which I can back up? Then I am damn proud of it. Perhaps what you call "intolerant" are just those who have the guts to retain a concrete sense of home and place and morals as rooted and deeply felt...?
