I've found the people here in Tyler to be a LOT nicer than where I grew up in the SF Bay Area. Smith County is the "wettest dry county in Texas", as they say, which illustrates a lot of the contradictions that go along with dry-county status here.

Weather...I'll take my CA weather back, but I have to admit that spring and fall climates are incredible, and it's nice to have some fall colors. Plus, I like the rain, and there's a lot more of that than in CA, for sure.

The backroads here are a joy. They're really well-maintained, and there's always something to see. Whenever we go anywhere, we more or less bypass interstates because the byroads are so pleasant to use here.

It's a little lacking in culture, but that's starting to pick up. It's a little odd in this part of Texas, because there's not a huge amount of your stereotypical Texas culture - which is rooted more in the Western part of the state - and there's some resistance to the notion of other (i.e. international) culture seeping in. Most people my age who I go to school with are thus eager to leave E. Texas for the large cities in Texas. Tyler is also therefore starting to get a bit of a reputation as a retiree town as well.

As for recreation...I've noticed that CA had more OPPORTUNITY for recreation, but people in Texas can actually afford to do it (and there's less bureaucracy, too). We have Lake Palestine over here, which is a nice swimming, boating, and fishing lake, and a great place to see the sunset from. It's also a great place to go motorcycling, thanks to the aforementioned backroads.

I love the backroads of Tyler. Been on them since I was about 7, and I'm 38 now...So lots of memories of them!
