We were in Lockhart a few weeks ago and we really liked Black's BBQ. Great food and also the restaurant is a real nice place to have your meal in.

Well it was 14 years ago since I was there, so it would seem they have upgraded the place. Since I was only there once, I may not have realized there was another area to sit.

So when I visit Lockhart again, which place should I choose? Black's or Kreuz's?

14 years ago, Kreuz Market was located in the place now occupied by Smitty's Market. That's where you were 14 years ago --- in the town square. It was a family dispute over rent that led to the relocation of Kreuz to its current, larger location north of the town square --- and the train tracks --- on U.S. Highway 183 in 1999. Kreuz owner Rick Schmidt's sister Nina Sells put together the newly-renamed Smitty's in the old building. So you haven't been to the new location like I have.

And to answer the question, go to both. And you can also go back to Smitty's, too, if you like.

When I was in Austin a month ago, I ate at Rudy's BBQ on Research Blvd. It was pretty darn good. I am not a big fan of chain-type BBQ, but I may make an exception for Rudy's.

Schoepf's in Belton (nice vinegary)
Hard Eight's BBQ in Stephenville or Brady (and there is one in DFW metroplex area-i think Coppell)
Next place i plan to try is Firehouse BBQ in Lampasas (used to be the ole Roadhouse BBQ, which i didn't think was so great, hopin its better now with new owner)

I love Rendezvous dry ribs in Memphis..lived in Memphis area and Mississippi for a few years...liked it all, Neely's, Interstate, Corky's, heck, even Tops. The one thing that I have adopted from Memphis and Mississippi, is puttin coleslaw on my pulled pork or beef sandwiches.

I really love that place. Great small-town atmosphere with the square, and terrific brisket and ribs, too. I'm shooting for February for my next Austin visit, and that place once again will be on my to-do list.

Yep, and one in Denton.

Maybe I should ask them for one in Plano?
