Finding acreage anywhere around Amarillo is difficult unless by 'acreage' you mean maybe a 1-acre lot in a little town. Most land in that area is tied up in ranches and farms -- getting somebody to cut you out a small acreage is just about impossible unless you are kinfolk....and then it's not easy! (Believe me, we tried!)
When we were planning a move to that area, we scouted around for 2 years looking at small towns and finally settled on the town of Panhandle.....20 miles northeast. We lived there 5 years and felt we had made a good decision. It's is more update and cleaner than most of the other towns in the area, no crime (we lived right in town and never took the keys out of our cars or locked the house the whole 5 years), nice homes, good paved streets, a good grocery store, a pharmacy, a few places to eat, large and active churches, good hairdressers, a dollar store......all the basic things you need to avoid having to drive in and across Amarillo every day. It also has an excellent school system.
Panhandle is also more accustomed to and accepting of 'outsiders' than some of the other little towns because there is a government facility about 10 miles from there and their employees transfer in and out. For that same reason there are usually houses for sale.
BTW....if you drive out to look Panhandle over, don't judge it by what you see from the highway (railroad tracks and grain elevators).......you need to drive down into downtown and all the way to the north and west part of town. You'll see a great deal of pride in the upkeep and care of the homes and neighborhoods, yards that are well cared for and a nice little city park. There is also a small golf course and a pool.
