Lewisville, TX
Tell me what you know...the good, bad, and the ugly.
My husband is looking for a promotion (he has to relocate everytime he is promoted). An option in Lewisville, TX came available yesterday, and we are thinking about him applying for it. We were just talking in the last couple weeks about how we thought the Dallas area might be a good fit for us. We were actually in the process of planning a fall trip out there to check it out again (haven't been since we went to the Cotton Bowl in 1999 or 2000).
We would like to live within proximity of a large city. Honestly, we would prefer to live in a larger city (our current city has 60,000 people but I grew up in the KC area and prefer a larger area). According to MapQuest, Lewisville is about 37 miles from Dallas...but is that going to be a much longer drive (for weekend shopping, sporting events, and other reasons to go into the city for entertainment). Around here, you can pretty much translate that 37 miles into about a 30 minute drive. Not sure about in the Dallas area.
Anyway, we are tossing around the idea of just "going for it". Worst case scenario, we hate it, and in a year or two he transfers to somewhere else. But we really think we might like it. We are sick of Missouri ice storms and going weeks without electricity in the winter!

I have been living in the Dallas area for 7 years and love it. it gets hot, but the fall is wonderful and we really dont have a winter. if you are buying a home, you can definitely get a lot of home for a good price. Generally anwhere north of Dallas is a pretty good area to buy a home. i currently live in Plano and love the area. i am in the mortgage business so i can definitely refer you to a great realtor.

I grew up in Lewisville. It is not a bad place to live. There is a huge mall there (Vista Ridge) and it is not far from Grapevine Mills Mall.
It is actually pretty centrally located to just about anything that you could want to do.
Now, I will say that rush hour traffic is a bear if you are trying to get in and out of Dallas.
There really is a ton of stuff to do in Lewisville and the surrounding area.
If you have a boat - there is a huge lake there too
HTH a little

Thanks guys. Keep the information coming! Neither of us would commute into Dallas for work. I am an elementary teacher so surely there is something closer I also grew up living on the lake, and would love to live there again.

Howdy
You'll like Lewisville. I have lived here for four years and am enjoying it. Where I live is a mile away from a very important interchange (I-35 and SH 121), where, if I use it, I could be at a number of places in just 30 minutes or less. There are 200 restaurants within a five-mile radius of my apartment complex. The city has a fine school district that stretches over Lewisville and a number of nearby towns, and there is still more growth coming. New houses are going in, particularly along the State Highway 121 Bypass corridor. D/FW International Airport is just eight miles down the road. Come on in, and I believe you'll fit right in!

On the map, Lewisville may look like a separate town, but it's actually just part of the metroplex....no space in between one town name to the next.....it all just melts into one big D/FW. So since you like city life, Lewisville should be comfortable to you. It's a nice area.

So far so good! Does anyone have anything negative to add ? Everything has been so positive (which is great) but I want a big picture feel. We would not be able to visit before he has to decide whether or not to apply for it. The deadline is Sunday to apply.
I realize it's HOT in Texas, which being from Missouri, I am only partially used to (we have crazy hot summers, and then crazy cold winters). What would be my proximity to swimming, water park? or something of that nature in Lewisville. We would rent the first year (to make sure it is a good fit), however when we purchased a home, I know we could definitely put in a pool to help. I can tolerate it being hot, as long as I can be around water.
Can you tell me about your local Lowe's store ? Good, Bad, Anything ? My husband works for Lowes, so his transfer would be to that store (Lewisville).

If you want a negative, I'll add this.....Lake Lewisville is huge - but it very crowded and busy and noisy, and the state has declared it 'the most dangerous lake in Texas.' It's just so close to the big city that it attracts all kinds of people who don't use good judgment and try to have too much fun in too short a time. I wouldn't want to live near it or on the road to and from it and sure wouldn't choose it for my water sports. There are lots of other nicer, safer lake within driving distance, tho.
As for Lowe's....never met a Lowe's I didn't like!!

There are two public swimming pools in town. One in old town and one by the main campus of the High School. They have turned them in to water parks with slides and all that goes with it.
Be sure to research the areas of town that you would want to live in....like all towns, there are good and bad areas.
I think that you will enjoy it! I know that I miss it!
