Curious
Why Hawkins? Not familiar with the area? Heavily wooded area - county is called "Wood" county - Large pines and oaks very rural area meaning no town in the entire county over 6,000 pop. Hawkins 1,500 Mineola near by 5,000 Tyler 20 miles South 100,000. Very pretty county, I like trees, but not much else outstanding about the area. Nice gated community of 2000-3000 called Holly Lake Ranch about 10 miles North of Hawkins- Really nice golf community with small lakes. If you want to know about Tyler - there are and have been alot of posts lately so look them up. Anything more specific - just ask. Welcome to this part of the state - Mark from Tyler

Meant to say look under the post up today under LETS TALK ABOUT TYLER OR even TEXAS WORST SKYLINE - I've been told by a friend Hawkins area look at least somewhat like upstate New York if that helps - Talking about Tyler - that where most people in Hawkins go to shop, take care of medical needs etc.

Hawkins has a beautiful lake called....Lake Hawkins. You are about 10 minutes to Mineola which has fast food...Subway...McDonalds...Pizza Hut, and a really nice Super Wal Mart. You are about 15 miles north of I-20 which is the gateway to the DFW Metroplex. There is a lot of outdoor recreation in that area. Beautiful country. It might be hard to get cable tv and high speed internet.

Welcome to East Texas! I've just made a new friend from Maine whose husband just transferred here, too (here being a couple of hrs from Hawkins). They are loving the warm weather and have bought a place with lots of big trees "like back home." In fact we met on this board and kept in touch til she moved here. Delightful family!!
We have a lake place at Holly Lake (see post above) .....that whole part of Texas is heavily wooded, very hot in the summer, wonderful and pleasant and peaceful in the winter....doubt it ever snows there, maybe a little ice storm now and then. That is a very rural area, but not too far from civilization (you have to develop an attitude of "if they don't have it at WalMart you probably don't really need it") .....country people, lots of hunting, fishing, boating. They are not backwoodsy, tho....I mean they do have internet, after all! Tyler has a good medical center and has good shopping and dining....you just have to allow a little time to get there and back.
My Maine friend has commented several times on how much better the roads are here than they are in Maine and how she's looking forward to her first winter here. Hope things work out well for you!

Thank you very much. We are looking forward to the move. It sounds like there are nice people in the area judging from the replies I have gotten.
Thanks again!

We are from Southern Maine. About 1 hour north of Portland. I am looking at a transfer from my current company and am hoping to come down there in the next couple weeks to see the area.

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I wanted to send a Huge THANK YOU to Hawkins for their hospitality during our evacuation from Gustav.
Your warm welcomes helped ease our stress.

Since Hawkins is a small town of 1,500 and you may not get a response, we, in nearby Tyler, who were "home" to thousands during Gustav, want to say we were glad to be able to help any and all we could and are pleased to hear the Hawkins folks helped ease your stress and hope you had a good trip home.
