Default Out of these four cities...

My husband finally got the list of available job openings. We've narrowed it down to four. Which would you choose and why? We want good schools, low crime, and friendly people.

Canton
Brenham
Jacksboro
Decatur

Thanks

Becca

i lived in Bryson (itty bitty town next to Jacksboro) and in Paradise (next to Decatur). i highly recommend both. cant get much friendlier or cheaper or lower crime than Jacksboro unless you lived in a ghost town.
Decatur, i believe, has a better school system, but prolly cuz the town has a little more money (it's actually close enough for some business folk in Ft Worth to live on their ranches and commute)
i know both of those towns VERY well. lived there for years. dont have kids, so dont have personal experience re the school systems.
let me know if you have any other questions
had you not posted before re: choices? i could have recalled that your husband is DPS and i had told you about the area?

Do a search on this forum for those cities. I remember a thread about Canton in which several residents expressed problems with the monthly flea market and the resulting traffic.

Brenham is a lovely place with rolling green hills and contented cows.

Default You have great memory :)

Belle, yes I have posted before about Jacksboro. The lovely things you told me about Jacksboro is what made us decide to put it on our "wish list" with DPS. Now I am just trying to figure out what order we want them in. We only get to put three on our "wish list" so I will have to take one town off the list.

We have a choice of Decatur North or Decatur South. Which is more "country" and has better schools?

Thanks again!!

Becca

Decatur North or Decatur South? huh? never heard such and i lived there for years!!!!
the town aint big enough to have that kind of designation!! i am confused! unless it has grown THAT much since last time i was there in 03!!!
and last time i was there it was ALL country! except for the one road with the WalMart, Davids Western Wear, Tractor Supply, IGA, etc!!

remember Jacksboro is REAL country-i mean redneck cowboy'd up huntin' fishin' friday night football town. i love the town, always will.
Decatur is still country, but i am sure that it has become a little more "upscale" a la Weatherford "cutting horse capital of Texas", due to the proximity to Ft Worth, for businessmen and movers/shakers who want the best of both worlds. Decatur has a really good high school football team, from what i recall, and a VERY VERY good hospital-i have had surgery there. the hospital in Jacksboro is almost like a nursing home with IV's and has to ship out anything critical to Ft Worth. Decatur has much more capabilities, more modern, more services. they even have a real ICU-20 beds. and a good ER, can handle higher acuity patients..unless it's major trauma, which automatically would Careflight out to JPS or one of the Level I-II Trauma Centers in DFW.

have you visited the towns? the only way you can really tell is to visit. meanwhile, i would read both towns newspapers online-they are both on the net. Wise County Messenger and Jacksboro Gazette.

by the way, if he were to work DPS in the Jack/Wise counties area, there are other towns in the area that are very nice to live in. Graham (in nearby Young County) is very liveable, nice, good schools, lots of old money in this nice quaint town with the largest town square in Texas. i have lived there too and loved it.

You can use this map to determine ES/MS & HS academic performance in each of your towns. (over the past 3 years)

What do you all like to do....what's important to us might not be important to you.

Good luck.
