Re : schools..........to look at the 2008 Accountability Ratings for individual districts and/or campuses, you can go to www.tea.state.tx.us/perfreport/account/2008/district/srch.ht (broken link)
There are around 15 separate school districts in Grayson County.......each has its own administration and atmosphere. Some are better than others, but, as a rule, the smaller districts are higher achieving and safer schools than the larger two (Sherman and Denison). In most cases, you have to live in a district's boundaires to be eligible to attend there, altho there are exceptions. Many of the smaller districts serve students in rural areas; most of the the 'towns' themselves are really very small (i.e.the school has more students than the town has residents). There are many homes all over Grayson County, nice houses on small acreages are very common, particularly for the younger families....more residents in the rural areas than in the towns except for Sherman and Dension. Many younger families with SAHM moms with children in activities, etc that live in town would be in the west part of Sherman....some very nice neighborhoods there....and north Denison. Pottsboro is a small town near Lake Texoma that serves a lot of young families in the new homes in the new subdivisons out there and an excellent school district. In all the rural school districts, the communities acitivites revolve around the schools which creates a feeling of community and opportunities to get acquainted with other mothers.
Sherman and Denison have really blended into one large town....hard to tell where one ends, the other begins. There is a lot of new shopping that has come to the area within the past 3-4 years....all the major department stores (nothing like Nieman Marcus, but nice stores) and new franchise restaurants as well as lots of good local eateries. There are two hospitals, the larger medical center being in Denison.
I hope this gives you a picture of the school/community situation there. I'm sure it's quite different than what you are used it, but it's a good place to live and raise a family compared to many places....not some of the cultural opportunities you are accustomed to in Nothern Virginia, I'm sure, but it's only a short drive to the Dallas Metroplex.... most kids in the Sherman area grow up being as familiar with Dallas as they are with their own town.
