Depends on what your definition of a mountain is. If you're talking anything over 5,000ft you're gonna have to go west a ways. Most of the true mountains in TX are in the far southwest corner of the state near El Paso. From Nederland to the Texas high point, Guadalupe Peak is about 750 miles - an 11 hour drive.

Or you could make a run for the Smokeys, about 850 miles to Knoxville, Tn.

There is no definition for a mountain. So technically the Texas hill country can be counted as mountains. So I'd say anywhere from a 3 to 4 hour drive.

What qualifies as a mountain does depend on one's perspective. If you're from the flatlands the hill country may be mildly mountainous, but their prominence isn't that impressive. If you're looking for rough, craggy mountains with thousands of feet of prominence - then you have to head to the Guadalupe Mountains in far west Texas.

You could head up to Arkansas. They do call them mountains up there but the tallest is maybe 2000 to 3000 feet above sea level.

Mountains like the Smokey mountains in south TN/north GA, preferably some that will have snow around Dec./Jan.

Yeah that's not gonna be the hill country. I'm not even sure how much snow the Guadalupe Mountains get. You're probably gonna have to head to El Paso, Las Cruces, NM, or Ruidoso, NM.
