I would guess going south on 1431 towards Kingsland.39 out of Hunt follows the river at water level. You never really get as high up as in this picture.

39 from Ingram to Hunt, and then 1340 to 41 may be the prettiest drive in TX though.

I've not traveled the roads you mentioned. I've about given up on the idea, much to the pleasure of my grown children, about moving to the Blue Ridge or Appalachian Mountains. Therefore, staying in Texas and maybe relocating to the Hill Country is on what I now need to concentrate.

I want it to be pretty and hilly so hopefully soon, I'll get to check out the areas mentioned on the posts on this thread. I checked out Leakey, Camp Wood, and Rocksprings last year and liked it pretty well although it's quite rugged.

I prefer not to be in an area where hunting is prevalent. First of all, I don't want to hear gunshots and secondly, I can't stand the thought of killing beautiful deer. I don't even like dove season. I believe there is much hunting going on in Real County.

Thanks lifertexan and everyone else for your comments. More comments welcomed from anyone.

Well that rules out the HC if you are serious about it.The HC is THE prime deer hunting area of TX.

Does that lead you to the Leaky / Garner St. Park area?

Ok - Now I'm homesick for the Hill Country. Moved to Cary, NC last month, and it will take some getting used to! Thanks for the beautiful pictures!

I kind of thought that but surely there would be some place far enough away from all of that. Do you think???

Question from gulf5driver:

I just checked the map and one would have to go a little further west on 41 to 83 and then south to Leakey and the Garner State Park area.

Well, people aren't ever hunting right beside you anyways. If you lived in even just a little town you would not hear anything, and probably wouldn't even in the country unless you lived right on the edge of a deer lease. If you mean far enough away not to hear it,you can find that.If you mean is there an area that hunting is not very prevalent, that might satisfy some philosophical opposition to hunting, then no,you won't find that in any rural HC setting in deer season. It is way too popular of a pastime, and pays the landowners way too much money for them not to run deer leases.

As was said, you would have to go on west along 41 to 83,and then go south on 83.Another great drive is 337 from Leakey to Medina. For a complete loop, start in Ingram and go along 39,1340,41,and 83 as described above, then back east on 337 from Leakey to Medina, and then up 16 to Kerrville and back to Ingram.Stop at Lost Maples near Vanderpool for a short leg stretching walk.

The great thing about 39 and 1340 is that you keep crisscrossing the Guadalupe and pass by some great cliffs as well.Lots of retreats along that road, for good reason.Very beautiful.

Great thing to keep in mind; find out where the deer leases are. Thanks!! I just think killing deer is terribly sad even though my own son has done it. His father introduced that to him much to my opposition. Oh, well!!

I've been on 337 from Medina to Leakey and liked it pretty well. From Leakey, took 83 to 41 to I-10 and then 290 to Fredericksburg so a lot of the routes mentioned here, I missed and will have to check them out soon.

Just out of curiosity, lifertexan, where do you think the lovliest place in Texas would be to live where when one leaves that pretty area, it doesn't disappear after a few miles? I'm referring now to Fort Davis. Just a short drive outside of the town, it gets really ugly again.

Sorry if this sounds lame but in my sunset years, I'm looking for true beauty, peace and quiet, and lots of nature.

Thanks!!

Hunting them is a necessity. They have no more natural predators to keep their numbers in check,so hunting is what prevents massive overpopulation and starvation.I personally don't hunt because I don't have a desire to kill things, but I understand its role in deer management. The deer are far better off under game management than they were even thousands of years ago.

My vote would be the HC area around Burnet/Marble Falls/Kingsland/Granite Shoals/Lago Vista. But I'm born and raised dry west Texas.Almost anyplace like the whole HC area and most of east Texas with it's abundance of water and forests is beautiful to me.If you've never been to Caddo Lake and the surrounding area, check that out.
