We have heard from a friend who live in San Angelo that it is a very nice place. What is all the info about this city??? Jobs??? Schools?? Shopping?? ETC???
What is the housing market like and rental market?? She is going to school to be a Medical Billing Specialist and Transcriber. I'm in school to be a Computer Technician. Any Info would be great. Thanks Again.

Joe, first, if you've got a few weeks before moving, get your FREE 2008 Texas Travel Guide. There's a link over on the right side to request a copy. It's FREE ! ! ! Over 200 glossy pages of places and things in Texas. If you don't have time for delivery, wait til you get here.

San Angelo is just a nice little place out there away from the big places. It has a university which started out as a junior college and nursing school. It has some military influence tho' I'm not real sure what that is. The local telephone company is Verizon, being a small Verizon hole in an otherwise AT&T territory.

There's a local river, the Concho, which flows into the Colorado, which goes through Austin to the Gulf of Mexico. The area is a forgotten part of what is loosely described as the 'Hill Country'. The public schools are in a district that includes Midland, Odessa and maybe some Lubbock area schools. Odessa has the school, Permian, that is the origin of the 'Friday Night Lights' fame. Football is king.

San Angelo is one of those places that you'll need to make of it what you will. Welcome to Texas, and home.

Joe,

I'm currently live in San Angelo, and have since 1998. I hope to answer any questions you have, and if I don't, please feel free to either send me a direct message (located above right), or in this thread.

San Angelo (to include local areas Grape Creek, Wall, Cristoval) has a population of just over 100k. The city is pretty spread out, so the density doesn't show as much as you might think; and, of course, some parts of the city are more dense than others.

Crime in the city is relatively low, and most serious crimes are against people that know each other. Drugs are here, but not as prevalent as I've seen in many other cities. I, nor my kids, have ever been approached to buy any. But, because San Angelo is 1 hour south of I-20 and 1 hour north of I-10, who wants to travel all the way out here for random crime?

Schools are good. I've attached a link below to San Angelo Independent School District. Some are better than others, of course. There's many elementary schools, a few middle schools/junior high schools, and three high schools. Because of population and demographics, all three are in different divisions, and therefore don't play each other in regular season sports. We are also home to Angelo State University, a four-year school with some Master's classes. They have recently signed on as part of the Texas Tech system, and dorms are being currently being built to accomodate the expected increase in students.

Housing is in a buyers market right now. Since there is an Air Force base in the city (non-operational - no flying aircraft... it's a personnel training base). Since summer months are over (primary moving dates for military), the houses that are left on the market have been for a while. They are decently priced depending on location. For one of the "better" areas of town, a 4-bedroom/2 bath house can be had for less than $150k. If desired, more luxurious homes can be bought all the way up into the low millions. There's also areas on the outskirts with available land, if that's the desire.

For commercial stores, there's: 2 super Walmarts, Best Buy, Lowes, Sam's, Office Max and Depot, Ross's, Petco, Hastings, and many others. We have a mall (link below), it has the staples (J.C. Penney, Sears) and many other smaller stores in there (of course). The link should provide all the stores included in the mall.

For restaurants, we have everything from diner-throwbacks (Roxie's), to local type (Zentner's Daughter, Twin Mountains Steakhouse) to chain restaurants (Golden Corral, Johnny Carino's, Olive Garden, Outback). Everything from Asian (Korean, Chinese, Japanese) to TexMex to steakhouses.

The local paper is the San Angelo Standard Times (link below). You can search there for jobs in the town. The big markets are Goodfellow (the Air Force Base), Shannon (hospital and clinincs), and Verizon.

If you have any specific questions, as I said before, feel free to DM me or ask in the thread here. If you're coming for sure... welcome!!!

Steve

Joe,

Rathagos is really a great source of info and is incredibly helpful. I'm looking into San Angelo and probably making a trip this fall and he has been very good about answering any questions I have.

I'd say you're in pretty good hands on this board.

I can not for the life of me find a house for rent online. Not a single one, well that has any info anyways. Tons of apartments but no Homes. Any ideas??? Is it just that there are none or is it one of those things you need to be in town to do??

Try to contact a couple of realtors. Some may handle home rentals. Or may be able to refer you to a home rental agency.

Wings...As Willy said, you can try realtors. You can either go through the internet or the paper link I sent you, I'm sure there's realtor's numbers in there. With the cost of renting and the relative low costs of houses for mortgage, they're roughly the same now. In fact, I have a 4 bedroom/2 bath house I bought brand new... and my mortgage payments are only around $780/mo. There was only one house for rent in the area I live in (the Bluffs), and the rent was about $1200/mo. Now, I realize that housing prices rose over the 10 years I've had my house, but even if it doubled, rent is almost as much as the mortgage, so people generally buy. I understand that you probably want to rent until you either decide to move here, or have the time to check the city out yourself before rushing into an area to move to. I will try to get some local realtor websites here and post them for you to contact as you wish.Rath

Rathagos you have been a wonderful help and as far as i can tell from what you have said and i have read I really like the Area. I do not think that our credit would be good enough to purchase a house so we are looking to rent until we can improve our credit good enough to purchase. I mean don't get me wrong i would love nothing more then to be able too purchase a home. So as far as i can tell it is mostlly apartments. Let me know what ever other info you think a prospective move in would need to know. Thank you so much.

Joe

I get annoyed with craigslist because they don't have a special section for San Angelo so you have to type in a special search. There have been enough requests on craigslist for San Angelo to have their own section, but it has not happened as of yet.

BTW belle, I saw on one of the other threads your plans for chicken s**t bingo and fun with another Texas hopeful and I wish I could be there. As it stands, the earliest I'd be able to make a trip to Tx will be end of Oct. Hope ya'll have fun.
