Just have to weigh in here. Toledo Bend is a very large lake. The southern end closer to the dam has less stumps and open water, so there is more recreational boating down there, including jet skis and "parties". Mid-lake has some cleared areas of open water but is pretty quiet for the most part. The north end is all fishing with shallower water and more stumps. The deep water is in the river channel itself. It is very quiet up there. Strictly fish camp country. So, whether you like to party or not, T-Bend has something for you.

Sam Rayburn has more cleared or non-stump areas and actually has more recreational boating.

I do have to go up and check out Caddo Lake. I am sure it has a haunting beauty. But I would be a bit nervous dipping into that dark water. I am sort of afraid of water snakes.

If you are afraid of snakes, be sure to watch out for the alligators. Caddo is a great place to fish though.

Well not much i wanted to share about the Piney Woods Never been there, but being from the hill counrty a lot i can say about it, seven beautiful lakes Llano Texas, is a hunters dream come true, Beautiful Hills friendly people Johnson City Has the Home Of LBJ on Hyw 290 West, you'll find a nice petting zoo, just before you come into Johnson city great rates, so much to do in the Hill country, hope to visit the Piney woods soon, i'm sure its very beautiful there as well, but then again, it's it Texas so it has to be a great place

Jefferson is a must to visit......it's like going back in time. You'll need to make reservations in advance, though......it's a very popular place for visitors in the summer. And very 'warm', to say the least.

I enjoy the Piney Woods......especially from the interior of an air-condtiioned car. It is hot and humid and if you are off the main highways, you have to look straight up to see the sky. I sometimes get claustraphobic among them but then I grew up in West Texas and trees were a foreign object to me.

Do they still do that May Day thing in Jefferson every year? I remember going once as a kid and seeing people walking around town in antebellum costumes, visiting antebellum mansions and a cemetery (something about an unsolved murder of a woman named, uh... Bessie something??), taking a boat tour of the bayou. It left an indelible impression, pretty neat.

That's funny you say that. I grew up in the Piney Woods of NE Texas and I feel the exact opposite in a place without trees-- very exposed!
