Do any people in lubbock think that we could get a galleria mall like in dallas or houston or maybe on a smaller scale. not that are mall aint good just wonderin. they would have to tear down the old one i think if we ever got one because i dont think that we could support two malls.

Agreed. I don't think Lubbock is ready or even needs a new mall. The new Canyon West is the biggest retail project since the South Plains Mall, and we're getting some nice stores. I think between a mall, huge retail center, North Overton, the new downtown revitalization, and most importantly the internet, Lubbock will be good on shopping.

You'll get a Galleria style mall when your metro area's population exceeds 4 or 5 million.

And when you stop using the word "aint". I love Lubbock no matter how bad the dialect is. Seriously... it will not happen anytime soon.

Dallas and Houston have the Galleria(s). San Antonio has La Cantera. Austin has The Domain. These cities all have large populations in comparison to Lubbock.

I don't think so...

Galleria's are so 70's, 80's & 90's. Every retail mall being built now is outdoors & non multi story. Even the old Broadway Square Mall here in Tyler built back in the 70's converted some of its stores to have direct access from the outdoors without having to walk inside the main front of the mall first.

Thanks Matt, Yeah we have a project here that we all hope will take place.. The Fountains.. a huge high end shopping center.. seems the new trend is in fact what they call Life Style centers.

The South Plains Mall could really use a face lift. It's still an adequate mall, but it's starting to show its age a little. But, no Lubbock isn't nearly big enough to support a super "galleria" type mall.

Interesting tid-bit: SPM is supposedly the largest single story mall in the nation.

Parkdale Mall in Beaumont is a little larger and it's also a single story mall, with a gross lease area of 1.28 million sf compared to SPM's 1.14 million sf. The Florida Mall in Orlando has over 1.8 million sf of GLA.
