My husband is interviewing at Baylor in next week, and I will have two days to check out the Waco area to see if it would be a good fit for our family. We'll definitely be meeting with a realtor to learn more about the housing market, but does anyone have any recommendations for places to go in Waco that would give me a good feel for what it would be like to live there? I'd like to check out the libraries, shopping, schools, parks and hospitals. Basically, if you had two days to sell your town to someone, where would you take them? Also, any restaurant recommendations for breakfast or lunch? Thanks!

I think you will be pleasantly surprised about what you will find in Waco on your visit. It is a really nice place to raise a family. The Midway and Crawford school systems are both very highly rated. Crawford is more of a country setting, while Midway is a large suburban school district. There are some beautiful housing areas in both of these districts. There are many Baylor professors living in Woodway in the areas off of Hwy 84. Woodway is full of pretty trees, and some of the lots have lake views. The housing prices are about in line with Dallas or Austin.

Richland Mall is the main indoor mall. It has recently added several stores, including a Build A Bear and Holister. There is a large outdoor shopping center called Central Texas Marketplace that has lots of stores to choose from. For specialty shops, Sironia and Spice are fun downtown shopping centers.

The branch libraries are nicer than the downtown one. There is a Hoover branch on Wooded Acres that has great children's programs, and the Hewitt area has a nice library as well. Both of the hospitals in Waco have recently built or are in the process of building new facilities. Check out both Hillcrest and Providence while you are here. Waco has lots of nice parks. Cameron park is very pretty, and Poage park in the Woodway area is a great place for children.

In two days time, I would try to check out the Maborn Museum if I had kids in tow, plus the Dr. Pepper Museum. I would try to shop at Spice and Sironia. I would eat breakfast at Cafe Cappuccino. and lunch at Amelia's in Sironia (the Amelia's trio is wonderful). I would drive around the lake. Great places for supper would be 1424 or El Siete Mares.

Hope you have a great stay in Waco!
