You know, I should really get more organized. Arrghh. Yeah, we are planning a visit in September. I checked the website and it looks like they may be open a few weekends in September so maybe we'll try for that. If that doesn't work I suppose there's always 6 flags.....
Thanks for the heads-up Lifertexan,

Try Fredericksburg
If you are coming to town then you need to come by Fredericksburg. We are a small Historic German town with a great hospital, schools and a festival almost every weekend! It is about 70 miles West of Austin and 70 miles North West of San Antonio. It is perfect Hill Country (in my humble opinion). I have lived here for 15 years and I love it. People have been moving in from all over the country. mod cut - read forum rules

Hi,
I was wondering how Buda is? I have heard that it is becoming a larger area with more stores being built and such in the past few years? Can you elaborate? Thanks!

Buda is growing VERY rapidly and will eventually be absorbed into South Austin as part of one continuous urban area, separated only by some areas with larger lots sizes and more trees.
Yes, there are lots of big stores being built along the freeway in Buda. It's also very close to major shopping centers that already exist or are under construction in far south Austin.
The west side of Buda is beautiful. You get into rolling hills with lots of oaks, it's quite nice and still relatively affordable but prices are going up fast and developers are gobbling up the land as fast as they can.
To the original poster about places close to Austin and San Antonio, you already got good advice but I want to add one more place to check out, which is the area around Blanco. It's about equal drive time from there to both SA and Austin and MUCH more hill country than New Braunfels. But if you need to be near urban amenities then forget about Blanco, it's still a very small town and has no major medical or shopping facilities nearby. n New Braunfels you'd have everything you need for easy access to the urban stuff while enjoying a taste of hill country. And your kids would LOVE you for moving there, whereas they'd be bored in a smaller town.

Ellen:
We used to live in Austin having relocated from Baltimore. If your hubby will be working in Austin go closer to Austin. The traffic in I-35 can be a bear... shades of 495 or 695 at rush hour. Wimberly is a wonderful community a little closer to Austin... or if you want to go a little further west look at Dripping Springs

I live in Panhandle area, but try to get down to Hill Country often, as it truly is the most beautiful part of the state. The small towns are charming and the bluebonnets so beautiful in Spring. There are wineries and orchards, ranches, etc. They have the best peaches in the world, big and juicy!
Have contemplated a move down Kerrville area, anyone know about that city?

What little I know about Kerrville is this:
It's drier and more pleasant in summer than San Antonio or Austin.
It's got river access, lots of water recreation.
It's growing and will grow faster in the future so it's a safe place to invest.
It's friendly.
It's got easy access to big city (SA) and to the best parts of the Hill Country.
I can't think of any negatives unless you're single and looking to find a mate there, that would be difficult. But if you're established in your family life then you can't go wrong. Just my opinion.

I will chime in on Kerrville also cause my dad and stepmom decided to retire up there. I am on the NW side of San Antonio and it takes me about 45 mins to be at there door. They have a hospital (good size one) if ya need to go and a small liberal arts college. If you are a retired person there is a pretty lively set of those folks up there also. Nice artsy things to go. Pretty, better temps than SA most of the time. Easy to get to the shopping and perks of this city. Takes about 2 hrs to get to Austin from Kerrville. Very nice town...oh yeah they just got new a new movie house!
