man I'm sick of people on this site just makin up crap for the sake of makin it up and tryin to make their case sound better. Both cities are a healthy mix of all types so your broad generalizations are just irritating. It's not like Dallas is Indianapolis or old timey Pittsburgh and Houston is New York at its peak. The two cities are just way to similar than different so people refusing to recognize this just look bias and like they have something to prove.

I would agree that the two cities are more similar than different. Fort Worth certainly brings the whole Dallas area into a swing into more stereotypical Texas.

Though a much smaller town, Beaumont, if closer to Houston, would have the same effect.

Dallas is definitely my next favorite city in Texas after Houston.

Dallas now has GW Bush as a resident and Houston has all of the Texas historical Figures allah Sam, Mirabeau lamar, San Jacinto mounement, U of H vs SMU, you could make comparisions by type of subdivisions Houston your driveway is in the front Dallas you share an alley with neighbors.....you can continue

Either one is a good choice.

So you know, I live in Houston (and love my city) but have a ton of family in Dallas meaning I've spent a ton of time there (and I like that city as well).

Your major differences aren't the ones people like to list, especially stereotypes like Dallas is full of uppity faux white-collar mentality posers while Houston is home to salt-of-the-earth working class types. People who say that must have never been to a bar in Midtown Houston or the Galleria.

The only real differences are geography and climate. Houston has a beach nearby and Dallas doesn't. As a result Houston is more humid than Dallas. But, Dallas is still pretty hot in the summer.

Oh... Dallas also traditionally has a better football team than Houston.

I am originally from Louisiana, but grew up from the age of 4 in the Bay Area. At 17 I moved to Dallas, and have lived here for 10 years. It's been really hard getting used to the cultural differences. In fact, Louisiana and Houston, i.e. South East Tx are more culturally alike than Dallas and Houston. Houston is Southern. Dallas is not.
I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed that in Dallas, they don't follow the 'unwritten' rules of southern etiquette, that if you're from the south, you learn from an early age.

for example....
-if you go to someone's house you don't know, you always ask b4 you use the bathroom
or...
-If you're going to someone's house, and you're bringing an unexpected guess, it's polite to call and say, 'hey yall, i'm bringing bob., is that cool.' Even tho southern etiquette requires you always say, sure it's cool, cuz of the hospitality aspect, you still mention it just to show consideration
-i don't know about other families, but we, and most of my friends, use ma'am and sir with everyone, even parents and older relatives
-you always offer help to someone, even a stranger, if they drop something or have a heavy load or need a door opened, and you ALWAYS, ALWAYS say thank you... in dallas, people look at you like you're all up in their business
-if someone does offer help, it's rude to refuse it
- even the bums and homeless people in Dallas are more aggressive and rude, they'll cuss you if you don't give them change, in houston, they sell flowers on the side of the road, or offer to clean your windows
-if someone offers you food at their house, it's polite to refuse the first time, and say something like, 'no, i don't want you to go out of your way.'
The proper southern, ie houston response is to offer again, and politely, you accept only after the 2nd offer. to accept immediately is rude, but to not accept at all is rude.
I try to explain this to dallas people, and they think I'm weird.
Even my friend from Atlanta Georgia, who now lives in Dallas, agrees with me.
Dallas is NOT southern, i don't care what anyone says.

In dallas, if someone offers you something, and you say, no thanks i'm fine, then they're just like, okay, whatev, and go on about their business.
In the houston area, you always smile at people, have conversations in the grocery store line, etc...
in Dallas, depending on the person, you may get that, you may not
although Dallas isn't Southern, culturally, we have a lot of southern people, who understand the rules of southern hospitality... but for the most part, dallasites don't get it.

In fact, i get pissed when my dallas born boyfriend leaves the house even to run to the corner stor and doesn't say, hey, i'm gonna run to the store for a second to you need anything. I've gotten in fights with him, telling him he's rude and inconsiderate. Dallas people think that stuff like is nosey.

In the south, houston always included, you excuse yourself to go to the bathroom, if you go somewhere, you always tell people where ur going, and ask if they want anything.
You never return a borrowed cassarole dish, or something, without cooking something to put in it in return.
You can never NOT offer your food to strangers in your home
but my dallas friends do that all the time... they'll be eating right in front of you, and not even acknowledge the rudeness.

Have any other southerners in Dallas noticed that people think we're rude for what in Houston and throughout the south is just simple consideration of others' feelings?

It's weird, cuz Dallas people r 'supposed' to be more sophisticated, so they think, and houstonions more laid back, then why do we have better etiquette than they (dallas) do.
Dallasites, and even in the surrounding towns, r just plain rude.
