Belle, I'm surprised. You haven't been to Fredericksburg??? You need to go. It's really not as far away as you might think. Find State Highway 16 via Burnet and Llano and go south from your area or take 281 to Johnson City and then 290 to the west. And if you like beer, you'll probably love what's offered there. But you need to go have a little German food and see a few shops. You'll really enjoy it there. Oh, and also go on a weekend.

yeah i know. and believe it or not, i have not been to Luckenback or Gruene or gone tubing down the Comal or any other river, or gone to the Schlitterbaum...lots of things on my bucket list.
when i lived in North Texas, i pretty much stayed up there, rarely ventured anywhere south of Lake Whitney/Hico/Stephenville etc.
if i ever went anywhere, i was always going to NM or CO to go skiing, or to Kauai
but yeah, now that i am in Central Texas, i have so much to explore. just tired of doing things by myself, so maybe some day i will find a friend to do things with..

Oh my! I went to Baylor, got a degree in Geology. So guess what we did every weekend? We ran field trips for the freshmen in the Geology department to Coryell, Bosque, Lampassas, Llano, Limestone, Leon counties, etc. We would always mention the early settlements in the areas, because the reason for early settlers picking a specific location, would invariably be tied to the Geology of the area, in that it somewhat reminded them of home. While they weren't in the Alps, at least the hill country was ... hilly, and they figured that this was as good as it was going to get . Sometimes when our trips took us through Cranfills Gap, we would have our boxed Chicken Lunch from Leslie's Chicken Shack on the grounds at the Old Rock Church. Ahh good times, good times.

I went back in the spring with my sister. I thought it was a quaint little town, saw lots of German store titles and some German flags. We ate at a little restaurant on the main drag that featured Texas/Southern & German food. Someone used an apt word to describe the town - German "flavored" is pretty accurate.

I've been to Fredericksburg and liked it a great deal. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Admiral Nimitz Museum, with its Japanese mini-sub and all the other interesting historical stuff. There are lots of shops, and nearly all were open when I was there. I'd like to go back.

I agree with the original post. Way too cute & touristy for me.

I'll drive AROUND Fburg a couple of times a year to get to Enchanted Rock when i visit it.

IMO there's as much "German Influence" in New Braunfels, Kerrville & even San Antonio (& probably a dozen other Texas towns) as there is in Fburg.... & w/o the lame tourist shops & $4 ice cream cone shops that one finds up & down Main Street Fburg.

(The Nimitz Museum IS something to see though.)

That does look like a very German influenced town there. But it looks more like a mix between German and Asian. The way the roofs are and the way the buildings are, it looks a little more asian architecture with German decoration.

Do a search for Bavarian house, architecture or town (or black forest)
and then come back and tell us what you think.

I visited Fredericksburg back in 2004 and LOVED it there! Very nice little town and lots of friendly people. The German flavor of the town sat very well with me being that I'm very much a Germanophile.:-)
