My name is SSG Patrick Halgren and I am in the military with a family of 3 children. I will be relocating to Fort Hood TX. for the first time. We plan on getting a apartment in a nice safe area; with good schools for the children. If anyone could give me some good information on good apartments to relocate to I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to be pretty close to the base, so the commute wont be to long. Maybe around 15-20 mins max driving time or shorter. I am coming from Ft. Lewis WA if anyone needs help in that area.

stay away from most parts of Killeen. though i do like the area near the airport-very nice.
most parts of Harker Heights are pretty upscale-lots of officers live there. if you want something more family oriented, less military, and more "country", then Temple or Belton or Morgans Point Resort. i stick to the north and west sides of Ft Hood (i work on post) and my commute is around 30-45 minutes but i love Gatesville area (where i paln to buy), but currently live in Kempner in the sticks. dont know anything about schools cuz i dont have kiddos. i would surf this forum for ft hood and you will see my posts and many others, to help formulate some ideas for you. i would go on the internet and check out the city government and chamber of commerce pages for all the towns/cities surrounding Ft Hood, and also check out their newspapers, to get a better idea of life there. Good luck and welcome to Ft Hood! I love it here! (and no i am not active duty-i am a civilian on post, ut am a former army wife) |

I would look on post first, then look at rental agencies online......but stay away from Rancier. That is one long, lousy street with bad areas all around it.

Killeen isn't half bad compared to the larger Texas cities when it comes to crime. simply put, there's not much reason to be scared to walk down rancier by yourself at night. i guess i can understand why it might be considered a questionable area to those who aren't from the neighborhood, but i assure you it's mostly composed of very decent, quiet people. this whole area is more country than it is urban.
that said, seeing as how you said you want a place that is certainly safe, i would avoid most of killeen, southwest killeen in particular (nice neighborhoods with some rotten teenagers). you want proximity to the base, so i would suggest copperas cove, but i can't remember the last time i saw really nice apartments there. your best option would probably be harker heights. it's not "upscale" but it's the nicest area in the immediate metro. |

I am moving to ft. Hood by the end of Nov 08, I have a wife and three kids (girls) doing contract work, what can I do to obtain on-post housing? And can you tell me about rental housing or apts in good areas. Trying to get away from riff-raff, we want to be comfortable and safe.

Thank you for your response. I have heard so many people say "Stay away from Killeen". Hearing that there are more options than Copperas Cove is relieving. My wife is an RN and wants to live closer to major hospitals, so we'll both have to give a little. Of course schools for the kids are very important to us.
