google maps 76513
Right at Fort Hood is Harker Heights and Killeen. A short way along the highway is Killeen then Temple. Waco is about 30 miles north of Temple. There's Hood military all over, the options are many. There's places to live in the wide open all over.
You might check Craigslist for rent houses. Bellestar will give you a better idea of where you might want to look, especially with horses.

Craigs List is the BEST place to find a rental home.
In terms of towns, it's all what you want.
My favorite town is Gatesville, because it's country, non-military, quiet, has everything you need in terms of basics (walmart, HEB, TSC-Tractor Supply Company, a really good western wear store, Sonic, a few good country cookin restaurants, good bbq) and lots of wide open spaces.
I go to cowboy church in Gatesville, and the jamborees at The Grove (a ghost town on the outskirts of Gatesville.
The town has lots of rodeos, team ropin's, jackpots, playdays etc. And it is just down the road from Hamilton, home of Circle T Arena, a world class equine center, which hosts lots of rodeo/equine events. Search this forum for Circle T Arena or Hamilton and you will find pics I have taken of it.
It is home to 5 prisons, 4 womens/1 mens. Including women's death row.
I work as a prison nurse there part time, and full time on post at Ft Hood.
There is a beer barn, a few liquor stores, and a small country/rock bar, and a big honkytonk (but not crowded-really nice-and once agian, no military folks there, just locals), so it is not dry there, which is nice too!
Rents are MUCH cheaper in Gatesville because it is nonmilitary hence rents are not based on BAH. I couldnt find a rental home, cuz there are so many corrections officers renting there, so I moved into a rental way out in the sticks near Topsey, and will stay here for a year while I save money to buy a housee in Gatesville.
Contact me if you need any help!
Oh, from West Range Road out near Ft Gates/Gatesville, it is about 30-40 minutes drive to where most of the units are on post and the hospital. It is a GORGEOUS drive through wide open range-lots of cattle, cattle guards, winding hilly roads-GORGEOUS. Though it is also the "range" and there is a sign "Artillery Fire Overhead-Proceed at your own risk" ha ha...so those of us who drive to work from Gatesville area are risking our lives hee hee..well not really, but kinda funny!Rather take that risk than driving on Hwy 190 in Killeen/Harker Heights/Copperas Cove than getting in a wreck with some dumb young soldier who drives like an idiot. The biggest risk driving West Range Road to post is hitting a cow or deer if you are driving in the dark.
oh and google Gatesville Messenger, the local paper, which is online, to check for rentals too.
i really cant recommend Harker Heights/Killeen/Copperas Cove wholeheartedly, but then again, i am a country girl and dont like surburbia..however there are a FEW areas of all those towns that are sorta country, on the outlying area.
i get enough of military monday thru friday, so it feels good to live in a small Texas town that is non-military, just good ole country folks.

Fort Hood for single female
Sorry to jump in your thread but I have similar concerns, so I thought I'd join in. I will be moving to Fort Hood early next year to take a position at Darnall Army Medical Center.
I am a single female in my early 30s and will be looking at renting a 1-2 bedroom apartment. I need a safe area with easy access to shopping and entertaintment. I also hope that the commute won't be bad (I currently communte 50 - 60 min each way in CA). I have always been a city girl so I don't know what to expect with the move. Thanks a bunch!

You might also want to look into the Georgetown/Florence area/Jarrell area. We have lots of Fort Hood folks in Georgetown, and it might be possible to find a place for the Arabian, too!
