It's hard to say which is best; as someone else said, it all depends on what you're looking for.
That being said, I personally chose Austin, when push came to shove. I can be in Dallas, Fort Worth, or San Antonio in a couple of hours if I want any of the amenities one of those has to offer. Austin is more relaxed for day to day living, more accepting of the weird, more comfortable for me.

Guys, I hate to tell y'all this, but look at the dates of previous posters. This is an old thread with an already tired subject. This has been explored ad nauseum on countless other threads.
But just for fun, I have six favorites. Houston, Austin, Lubbock, San Antonio, El Paso, and..........
.....Frisco!

If you love Philly, I'm thinking Laredo might be the deal!

Frisco! Really? I've only driven through it a number of times but it seems to be having its share of growing pains.

It is rapidly becoming a city and no longer a small town, just passing 100,000 residents. There are several locations with different kinds of plans (Grand Park, Newman Village, Frisco Market Center, etc). The city's town square is still under construction.

Forth Worth is one of the safest cities in the USA? Are you that in love with the place that you are in denial. The crime rate is quite a bit higher then the national average...holy crap.
The safest places to live in TX seem to be the hill country of Texas. Fredericksburg is very safe...also very small. I personally would never LIVE in a large city again. Visiting is fine but never again will I live in a large city.

Best small city in Texas is Friendswood, Texas. Near Houston on one end and Galveston on the other with Nasa (Clear Lake) across the freeway. Lovely town. Clean, fun and best schools in Texas. Good luck

Lived there as a small child, and it was so much better back when there were still woods and such . We used to drive into Houston on 45 from FW, and the first real sign of civilization was Almeda Mall (back when it had the teal awnings). Of course, when it rained, people would water ski up and down our street.......
