Most overrated or overhyped city: Dallas, Austin, or Houston? (San Antonio: 2015, vs.)

You've been advised before city population means nothing. The best way to determine the true size of a city is by it's metro area population. Ft Worth has a larger city population than Atlanta, GA, but, no way is Ft Worth alone on Atlanta's level.
I know the prestige of saying Houston is the largest city in Texas may give you a rush, but metro Houston is smaller than Metroplex by 600K + and widening.
If you have a problem with D/FW being a MSA, complain to the Census Bureau. And, about your Dallas is somehow semi-pro to Houston being pro remark; the Metroplex is one of two 6 major league sports franchise metro areas in the entire Southern U.S. along with Atlanta. Houston doesn't offer the NHL or a NASCAR event (TMS has 2 events). Seems like your city may be a bit minor league.
The only point you have right is that Dallas is not on Houston's level. True, per GaWC 2008 world city rankings Dallas outranks Houston.

It's actually 500K and not really widening. DFW is barely outgrowing Houston.

We don't need NASCAR or the NHL. Hell, Denver has all of the above except NASCAR. Why? It's a regional capital, like Atlanta and Dallas. Dallas' trade market is larger than Houston's because Houston is sandwiched in by DFW, Austin, and SA.

Yeah, if you see how many times the cities on that list have switched places every four years, then you'd know that list was garbage and wouldn't use it. The GAWC has been messing up since 2000.
Actually, the weight of Houston's particular economies is more so than Dallas's even if Big D's is more diverse. Houston's a major PORT city, one of the largest 3 in the USA. Dallas cannot match that. Houston is the ULTIMATE medical city. Dallas cannot offer that...what with VIPs from around the world who come here to H-town and the concentrated related activity. Then there's the energy industry...
so to disagree...the USA would have a difficult time functioning without Houston.
Places like Atlanta offer what Dallas does, more or less.
Weight of economy in Houston heavier than Dallas'? Based on what logic?
DFW is loaded with major corporations in technology, aviation, healthcare, housing, energy, retail, comsumer goods, banking, insurance. I do not understand what particulars about Houston's economy gives it more weight, as you commented.
The DFW area is a major port. In the new age of technology air cargo hubs, rail and highways are of greater importance than ever over traditional seaports. D/FW airport is the 9th largest cargo hub in the U.S., 25th ranked in the World. And if you knock out Memphis, Indy and Louisville (due to major FedEx and UPS cargo hubs) DFW would rank much higher. 60% of all air cargo to Texas is handled through D/FW airport. Dallas Logistics Hub in South Dallas is still under development and will be one of the largest inland ports in the nation. So Dallas can match Houston in this area.
The ULTIMATE medical city? Well there's no doubt Houston leads Texas in medical facilities. But to say DFW cannot offer top notch medical facilites is ignorant at best. UTSW Med Center and Med School, Baylor, Childerns, Methodist, Parkland and UT Health Sciences Center are all high quality facilities. Just not all concentrated in one area like the TMC.
Energy. Agreed Houston has the edge. But DFW's ExxonMobil, TXU and Fluor are major players in the energy game.

Maybe based on GDP. Houston is ahead of Dallas in that.

Yeah, just knock out the cities ahead . That doesn't make sense. Dallas' Logistics Hub in South Dallas County is being built in conjunction with the Port of Houston. If you didn't know that. Basically, the POH is getting too crowded and needs somewhere else to unload cargo. The Ports in Galveston and Freeport are expanding though, which is helping out the POH. Dallas is more rail, Houston is more sea, with some rail.

Dallas definitely has top medical areas, but none rank as high as Houston's. There was a list somewhere in the smackdown thread about top ranking Texas hosptials, and Houston dominated easily.

There are more ExxonMobil employees in the Houston area than Dallas area if you didn't know. The HQ may be in Irving, but the workers are in Houston.
Austin is overhyped, but it still is a great place. I mean, you can always find a festival, fun bar, good restaurant, outdoor activity, or otherwise something unique to do. Like many places in Texas, people say hello and open doors for each other. But in Austin you can find a vibe in neighborhoods like South Congress, downtown, etc, that no other Texas city has. That being said, however, I think other Texas cities like Dallas, Ft Worth, Houston, Lubbock, etc have a lot to offer as well, but just in other areas.
Sorry Austin, other cities have areas like S Congress in Austin, long before you thought S Congress was cool. Take SA, they have Southtown/King William District/Broadway 410 plus many festivals)fiestas in the cities all during the year. Loop 1604 club land
I thinks its funny it takes a combination of cities to compete with houston that should say a lot. Yea dfw(dallas-fort woth) may be largest metro in the state. But when it comes to individual cities houston beats everyone and almost double the pop. of the 2nd largest city (dallas) in texas. Houston has been ranked 1 by two diff organizations in 2009 for best place for a business and relocating business. So please so research for 2009 and see what city is ranked high. This is the last post I'm posting in this room because the ppl have no life and are so ignorant and oblivious.

Dallas nor Ft Worth had any control over one another growing 31 miles apart. As I've told you before, you're argument is with the Census Bureau. They're the ones who found enough evidence to confirm the communting patterns justified the formation of the DFW MSA.

Accurate. DFW is Texas' largest metro area.

The rankings still may remain the same if all were even, but Houston city has the largest land area by far of any of Texas' four largest cities.
Houston 600 sq land miles.
+200 sq mi over SA.
+300 sq mi over Dallas.
+350 sq mi over Austin.

No. That would be San Antonio.

I know Site Selection has Houston metro ranked #1. DFW is #2. I'm not aware of the other organization you've mentioned. I really don't read much into what these rankings indicate about the vitality of a metro area; example, Detroit is ranked 5th and from what I understand their economy is fairly stagnant.
