Best Small Town for Physicians in Texas
What do folks think would be a good small or medium sized town for a physician to relocate from Florida? Our first priority is safety for our kids. We are leaving FL to look for more of a family-oriented community. Also looking for friendly, appreciative patients, less traffic and good private school options. Also, we don't speak Spanish and this has been an issue in FL. Thanks.

Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park and Leander out close to where I live. There are 3 new hospitals and some medical centers just opened out here and even though Spanish may be just a plus to know here in SOME instances (like police officers, some schools, hospitals) , it is definitely not a necessity. I took 7 yrs. of Spanish, and don't remember a lick of it if I had to speak it and I have absolutely no problems. My sister in law is an ER Nurse and doesn't speak spanish and she also doesn't have any issues with it (she's in Houston)

Stephenville
Decatur
Salado
Georgetown
**Emergency Room is my background. I want to add that Decatur and Georgetown and Stephenville have very good hospitals. Graham has an incredibly good hospital for the small size of the town, due to lots of benefactors from big oil families.

I would suggest that you look very seriously at Amarillo.
It's a good size, has very friendly people, has some excellent schools and neighborhoods, and serves as the medical center for the TX panhandle as well as NE New Mexico, the OK panhandle, western OK, and SW Kansas. There are 2 good-sized public hospitals (one of which is a Level III trauma center), a branch of Texas Tech medical school, and a VA hospital in town.
And, you'll find it to be quite uncommon for Spanish to be a patient's sole language (if they even speak Spanish at all)...especially when compared to other cities in Texas. You'll also likely find that the litigiousness (and overall crap attitudes of patients) that you're used to in Florida really isn't a prevalent issue.
Finally, if you cruise around the NW side of town (or if you drive down to Palo Duro), you'll find that the terrain isn't all as pancake-flat as you might have have thought.
My only disclaimer is that you better not mind the smell of cowsh*t. Because, the "smell of money" permeates the air every time the winds blow out of the SW across the feed lots of Hereford. Sure clears out the sinuses, though.

Check Midland. While not the most scenic, there are several good private schools, and a GREAT NEED for physicians of all specialties! What is your specialty? My dh is a physician too and we moved here from Virginia and before that South Dakota.

Feel free to check out San Angelo. Aside from the military base, the medical arena is the largest employer in the city. There are two hospitals and numerous clinics in the city.
If you want more information on San Angelo, please let me know here or DM/PM me and I'll set you up with all the information you need. I don't know how the "professional ring" is with doctors, but my wife is a nurse working for a pediatrician at a clinic here in town. I might be able to find out if there's people in your professional circle who would be willing to talk to you.
Good luck!
Rath
P.S. Here's a link to a thread where I discussed the city and provided some links you could use to get more information: http://www.city-data.com/forum/texas...an-angelo.html My post (#3) is where I provided the information.

IMPORTANT thing to keep in mind. you may definitely want to stay away from South Texas. malpractice rates are triple south of the Nueces River. you will find it is a litigious society down there. they love to sue. thank God i got out of there unscathed after one hellish year.

I would look at Tyler. Tyler has two very well known medical centers. Mother Francis and East Texas Medical Center. Mother Francis is doing procedures that are way ahead of their time and people travel from all over the south, southeast and Texas. Tyler has about 100,000 people and is only a little over an hour from the DFW metroplex. Check it out!

Yes, Tyler is the MEDICAL CENTER OF EAST TEXAS very pretty town, roses, azaleas, Historic District yet 14 story condo with sales price of 350,000 to 1,500,000 lots of retires Level One Trama Center, unusual for it's size serves 350,000 population area 200,000 in the county and 4 private schools thru high school. Lowest city property tax rate in Texas of any city over 30,000 population and most under. City is debt free - 30 millon dollar University of Texas at Tyler Performing Arts Center with plays etc that stop in Dallas come to Tyler. East Texas Symphony is very good - I have the Houston Symphony as a comparison and was very pleasantly surprised with Tyler's quality. uspcale shops, many golf courses, one where The Texas State Open is played, a Jack Nichalos Academy one of only 4 in the country, 4 or 5 upsale areas - Cascades, Holly Tree, Eagles Bluff, The Woods and others, several interesting restaruants... JustMANY extras for it's size - TYLER IS A MUST TO CONSIDER... ANYTHING ELSE?
