Hi Ron,
I know nothing about Harper except some statistics I've looked at on the internet of which I'm concerned such as crime, ethnicity, etc. I've been to the Hill Country but have not visited Harper although I'm interested in possibly moving there as well as other areas in the Hill Country.
The property taxes are about $5.50 per $1,000 of home value less in Harper than where I now live in Central Texas. I was looking into Vanderpool and Tarpley but, oh my gosh, the taxes are REALLY high so that eliminates those towns.
I'd like a few acres and way away from the bustling crowd, so I'm afraid some areas of the Hill Country that are growing by leaps and bounds are not for me.
Would you be so kind and give me an idea of the terrain, greenery, etc? I'm really wanting to live where hills are abundant but my "wants" or "not wants" list is long.
I plan to visit during Spring Break or this summer.
Thank you.

The only bad would be that it is very small, if you consider that bad thing. Fredericksburg and Kerrville are only 20 minutes away, and San Antonio is only about 1 1/2 hrs. away. The area is pretty, with nice hills and lots of oak trees. All in all, if a small town with a slower pace in a nice area is what you want, I don't see going wrong with Harper.Especially with SA just down the road when you need a big city.

I do remember reading some posts regarding oak wilt areas. Does this affect Live Oak trees as well or another oak such as post, red, etc? Since it's oak wilt, I'm hoping it doesn't apply to all oak trees.
Thanks!

I don't need a big city, at least I don't think I ever will, and don't like them anyway. Kerrville and Fredericksburg are plenty large and as you say, quite close by. I like small and am pretty much a homebody, enjoying nature and my home as well. I love working on my property and it satisfies me very well. As I approach my grand sunset years, the only entertainment I really need is getting together with family, enjoying my dogs, and loving nature.
Thanks, liferT.

Kew Gee,
I think you might like the Harper area based on what you have written.
Good Luck in in your hunt and please post back after your trip.

Oak wilt primarily affects the Red Oak (family? genus? I don't know my biology) of trees. This includes live oak and post oak. The white oak family is much more resistent, although not immue, to the effects. This includes the Chinqapin and the Monterry Oak (which is the spanish white oak, maybe?).

Harper
Ron,
Harper is TINY. There is one gas station, one small store, and a post office (sorry Harper but that is about it) and a school. The school district is the largest employer (and it is a very good school). The post office is even open the same hours as the school. If you want peace and quiet, a million stars on a black sky, and more deer in your yard than could possibly be on one planet, plus people who will wave to you simply because you are on the same road as them going the other way then give it a try.
20 minutes east you are in Fredricksburg. 20 minutes south you are in Kerrville. About 1.5 hours farther south and you are in San Antonio. And nothing but rolling hills and ranches in between.
I love the Harper High School football games. It's 1A and is a real treat to watch. If you have ever seen Friday Night Lights but on a smaller scale, its really like that.
