I do believe however Lubbock will see steady, but moderate growth. Possibly move the outer edges of the metro about 5-7 more miles in every direction, and more in the Canyon south area. Possibly see a downtown skyline consisting of 4 or 5, 8 to 15 floor high end student housing loft like complexes. Maybe 2 corporate, or plaze type 20+ floor buildings added to the center city, and 3 or 4 more 10+ floor hotels in other areas. A freeway system moderately upgraded with possibly 1 more major artery coming in and out from Austin, or an upgrade of the San Angelo freeway into an interstate. The one major change I would say will happen by then if the industry doesn't flop is a major growth in the local airport, but not that of the size of other major Texas cities. As far as population probably a good 450K to 550K in the metro area making it comparable to the likes of maybe Des Moines, or Mobile today. That is the metro, not city alone. I also think the University will be around 45K in enrollment by that time. Anyway, that's my view at Lubbock by 2020.

Amid what otherwise are good points in your post, that first sentence was not necessary, TX_AGGIE13. In fact, it's way out of line. I suppose you or someone else thinks threads about Dallas, Houston, El Paso, McAllen, College Station, and San Antonio, and for that matter, Texas, are silly, too. Because that's what would be the case if this one is. Come on, buddy. We're all Texans.

We have great weather all year long, with it never being too humid or too dry, 300 days of sunshine a year. And despite what the estimates say, we're growing at a good pace. I just drove in the SW part of town today, and there were at least 2,000 new homes I had never seen before, and I had only driven there a few months before!
There are plenty of reasons for Lubbock to be growing, but it's people's prejudices and stereotypes that inhibit it the most. Lubbock's not dreaming, it's preparing!

The key word, more than anything else, is preparing. This city can do it better and differently than other places. They can also learn from other cities' mistakes. You play to your strengths. And that southwest side is good, very good.

No, I have no problem with Lubbock at all, I actually think you guys should petition city-data to give you your own section although The Valley Area, and Corpus being larger would probably throw a fit. I just have seen alot of Lubbock threads in posted in areas of city-date that they don't fit. Ie: entertainment......

If you're referencing my "What comes to mind when you think of Lubbock" thread, I posted it in the Other Topics forum to get replies from around the country without it being off topic on the General US forum.

Probably one of em', not sure. Not really referencing anything specific, just seen a bunch of them in different areas of city-data than "Texas" where they fit. Like I said, I have nothing against Lubbock, and I think Lubbock, and a few other places should get their own section on city-data. Don't have to agree with me if you don't like, but that's my thoughts. I actually liked this topic....

If it happens, they'll probably lump Amarillo and Lubbock together in one region, but that's another thread for another day.

This link might offer a small answer to your question, whitegiant.
Market*News
What Lubbock is going through is no different from what anyone else in Texas is going through. If Texas will be fine, then Lubbock will be fine, too. Sometimes, even promising projects get pushed back for money reasons, but it often doesn't mean they won't get built. Others keep going. We're a resilient state. We'll have peaks and valleys, but there will be a time when the state's cities and towns will come back with a vengeance. There may be a slight dip, but you won't see Texas cities falling apart; it's just not going to happen.

According to some surveys, Lubbock has the second best housing market in the nation and is the 11th best place to ride out the recession.
