Lubbock in 2020 (West, Wolfforth, Idalou: condos, hotel, university)

Where do you see lubbock in 2020 how big do you think it will be so you think it will have a better downtown. what new stuff do you think it will have or that you want it to have by then.

I would be more concerned with the next 4 years, than something so far off. The Economy, a Socialist Dictator about to be elected, and so many other negative things taking place, America will be lucky to make it 4 more years let alone to 2020.

They are about to start working on giving downtown a new facelift. I think Lubbock will keep growing. I'm not worried about the economy.... we will bounce back up.

The answers you're looking for may vary with different Lubbock residents and some across the state. My opinion, based on the last few years in my visits to the city, is that I believe Lubbock on the verge of major growth. I have sensed that ever since the beginning of this decade. Now, that could be tempered if the national economy continues its downturn, but then, all Texas cities could be affected. But I anticipate improvement, and things in Texas are still good. That aside, I do envision Lubbock becoming more of a major player in the West Texas economy. I've stated in other threads that if that city had vision and they played their cards just right, and can also land a giant corporation or two, as well as grow the local companies, you'll be seeing quite a few new things happen. They must stress two things: business and additional tourism. Regarding Downtown Lubbock, that puny skyline needs major expanding. They will need a good amount of office space. That needs to come first. If any planned high-rises are going to be in the form of condos, they cannot be built first. They have to have business downtown first, and then go from there on other projects. It's a lot of work to be done and they'll have to prioritize carefully, but I do see it happening.

I applaud that big-time. They need some new life there, and I can't wait to see what pops up. This is the time for them to really be creative.

With as many people as they have coming from Eastern New Mexico, expanding the area's shopping opportunities wouldn't hurt, either. They've got a couple things going on on the southwest side that are intriguing.

As far as people living there, I wouldn't mind seeing a metro population of a million, and that's doable by the year you're suggesting. Lubbock city proper could have half a million. I see the surrounding areas (at least, Wolfforth, Shallowater, New Deal, Woodrow, and Idalou) definitely picking up new residents. But some things, of course, are going to have to happen.

I do think that the new freeway and the 300-room hotel next to it are big positives, since they will both serve a vastly revitalized area (which ten years ago was horrible--the university even red-flagged it, telling students not to go there). It might be the most exciting part of the city now, and has become a model for projects in other cities. Hopefully McDougal can do the same for the CBD.

I think Lubbock will grow as well.. it has the loop already installed, something EL Paso is just now doing, it has room to grow, it has the infrastructure to grow as well.

I have considered living there.. the neighbor across the street son has been a cop there for many years, he just retired recently... we often talk about the city.

I hope it isn't just Mr. McDougal, but it's certainly a start. I'd like to see other developers look at the entire metro area. As long as there's space, there's opportunity.
