Default Dating scene in College Station--HELP!!

Hi,

I am a single female considering going to grad school at Texas A&M. Because I am almost 30 and marriage-minded was seeking info. about the dating scene.
I am wanting to attend a University also that preferrably has more straight men than women. ANY feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!
Tina

Default Aggies are wonderful

My husband and I lived in Bryan/College Station in '95 when we were 30ish. We had relocated there from California. We weren't affiliated w/A&M in any way.

We lived there for 4 years and grew to have immense appreciation for "Aggies". There is probably no other university that develops greater character and camaraderie in its students.

Our daughter was born in C.S. and we joked how we'd be pleased if she grew up to be/marry an Aggie.

The men there are real men. (o.k. probably some aren't but I'm generalizing

Real men in the sense that they have old-fashioned, gentlemen's values. They take pride in being unique, bucking the current social trend where men are women, women are men, etcetera.

I think you might love it, and despite your approaching age 30, there are many grad students in that ballpark-age.

To be fair, I do recall thinking it would be a difficult town for a 30 SOMETHING, not a student, to get out and find someone. It seemed (and I may be wrong!) that everyone under 30ish was a student/under or grad, and everyone OVER that approx. age was married. I have heard that it's a tough town, say if you're a 30- something faculty member, in terms of "dating".

I think you should seriously consider it, at least checking it out.

Dear TeachCal,

A word of encouragement to offset the profound wisdom above (wink wink):

My DH is 5 1/2 years younger than I. We met when I was 28 and he had just turned 23. He's a catch, too. My good fortune is something I thank God for daily.

I mention that as I too, was approaching 30 when I met the man of my dreams. I never felt "too old" either. Don't you ever worry about it. (Not that you are/were! Just getting on my "now that I'm older" soapbox.

Live your life fully, stay joyful and that magic will happen when you least expect it, as many say.

Default not my cup of tea, but . ..

I went to undergrad at A&M. There are tons of singles, many of them grad students and probably closer to your age, and yes they are all going to be straight in college station.
I have to say that I hated college station and the aggie culture. They have an intense school pride, to the point of delusion. The culture is one of conformity. If you like conservative, traditional, predictable, then this is your place. If your looking for someone open minded or a little unique, you MIGHT find them at a&m, but it would be hard. most of the students here are from small texas towns, if you are at all familiar with that mentality. a&m is very strong in engineering, teaching, agriculture - tends to attract more conservative types.
as the previous poster said, the men are indeed very respectful and chivalrous, if this is important to you.
i wouldn't move back to college station for a million bucks, but lots of people love it. i managed to live there 4 years without meeting a single person i would have liked to date.
to each his own . . .

I'm male, single and just turned 30. There's nothing to worry about. 30 is the new 20. I know several happy graduate students to come out of A&M. They are married to people they met at the college. Only one thing you must be concerned with, your car, kitchen, and more will be maroon for a very long time.

Default Aggies needed, please

C'mon Ags!

There must be some Ags out there who can explain to TeachCal how great Aggieland is, give her first-hand account.

Bumping this thread--it's the matchmaker in me.

Oh dear. I'm afraid you're asking quite a bit.

I am an Aggie, still have several friends in grad school, and even a few single professor friends and they sincerely think that the town is dreadful for anyone over the age of about 23. Everything is geared toward undergrads. They certainly run the show.

But...I've been wrong before.

Default Aggieland

I may be a little late judging by the dates of the previous posts but here is my two cents. I am an Aggie. I attended Texas A&M for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I now live and work in College Station and still have strong ties to the University. The community is conservative and family oriented...for those who are married. The undergraduates are mostly drunken partiers (I know...I was one!) During graduate school, everyone was married or engaged (At lest the people who were worth pursuing). Of course I have to generalize here. To the students, I'm an old man...to the married community, I'm still a drunken partier. Me, I'm stuck in the middle. I'm not saying it won't work for you here...I'm just saying it hasn't worked for me...yet. I've seen many of my friends (both male and female) find a spouse at A&M. I love it here and it is a great place to raise a family and have a career. A&M is a great school which is strongly conservative and steeped in rich tradition. I am sure you will find what you are looking for in College Station, both academically and personally.

Here is a link to a ranking of the cities with the most singles. On this list, College Station is number 3.
