Center, TX?
We have some friends who are moving to Center this year. They are from Texas, and I used to live in Lufkin, so I have a little bit of understanding about the area, but not specifically about Center.
Anyone local to that area have any insight? I am interested. We'll probably be traveling down that way for a visit at some point. It's been a long time since I was in East Texas...
Thanks ahead of time.

Not much has changed probaly since you moved. My whole family is from Lufkin. I don't have a scope on Center but I am sure someone here does.

I was hoping so, but maybe not...It is a small place, after all.
I have been told that there is not even a Wal-Mart there, which in the places I have lived is the benchmark to whether there is anything at all going on in the town. Kind of scary, but in a way, it would be kind of intriguing to live in a place that untouched by the current boom in big-box retailers. Certainly a different way of life.
Is there anyone on here with any impressions of Center, or its surrounding area?
Thanks!

Center, Texas is in Shelby County in east Texas. The county borders Louisiana.
WA Transplant.........Can you tell me something about Center Point? I'm wanting to retire (or go before such time) to the Hill Country. If you've read any of my posts, you can tell I'm wanting small and your description of Harper sounds really good to me. I'm also considering other areas but definitely am hoping to find a place that won't be overrun with people in my lifetime.
I'm thinking Kerrville is already getting too large for me although it pretty much fits the bill except for that.
I'm considering many things such as lower property taxes, cooler climate whether it even be a few degrees like you mentioned, ethnicity, crime, and even less tornado threats than where I am now located, etc.
Tarpley and Vanderpool looked good except the comfort index level (humidity and heat) is too low (not good) and the property taxes are sky high.
Thanks.

Crime is EVERYWHERE, even in Center. A man was beaten to death in his own own this week. There are no clues yet. You can read about it at ksla.com

have only been there for high school ballgames, but from what I've seen ... just not much to discuss about Center. Other than family (or family land), hard to imagine someone would choose Center as a place to retire.

Actually...they are moving there to raise a family. They wanted to be in Texas, they wanted land, and they want to raise their kids in a small-town environment. Also that's where they could find a job.
I know crime is everywhere, I grew up in small towns and every place has its problems. I am more interested in what the town is like, what people do around there, civic pride, etc.

Center Point
KewGee,
Center Point is a very small town about 10 miles due south of Kerrville (which by itself is 60 miles NE of San Antonio). Center Point is very small. I don't know the population but its got to be in the 500 range ( http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/...CC/hlc17.html). There is lots of available property around it although it seems like the price is climbing yearly.
But you should know that except for Kerrville I am not sure there is a town larger than 5,000 in a 40 mile radius of Kerrville. Boerne is about that as is Fredricksburg. We are not in Kerrville but about 10 miles away. We live between Ingram and Hunt (two more small burgs of maybe 1,500 and 250 respectively).
In the Hill Country it really depends on how remote you want to be. Since I retired too health care accessibility was important. The missus would have been content to be even more remote. As a point of reference, despite being pretty close we don't get cable, or natural gas, and can't get a paper delivered. None of which is a big deal. Just puts it in perspective.
Lots has appeared in the forum about property taxes. Tax rates are not that hard to obtain, there are big differences between city and county, and the lions share are school taxes.

Center hasn't changed much over the years. It is probably too small town for what you're looking for. The best thing I can say about it is that it's a short drive into Lufkin to eat at Ray's. Best hamburger and onion rings. Period.
