Somehow that seems familiar although I can't pinpoint a specific time I've heard this. I will say my very first thought when I read the post was that the concept was to mask the awkward situation and as a show of solidarity with the server. Seeing as I live in San Antonio I'm guessing I've experienced the clapping and was told or could tell that's how it was intended. As to the laughing I'd see that as a way of showing it's not really a big deal--laughing it off for the person who broke the plate.

I've seen this happen in Lubbock as well. It makes since to me, making a light-hearted joke out of something that would otherwise be embarrassing to the person who dropped the dishes. Something similar might happen with other gaffs of the same nature, though never in a formal situation. For instance, has anyone ever gotten cheers when they've eaten it on a ski slope?

Yes, I've seen it before. Grew up in Greater Southwest Houston.

I've never got the humor in dropping in a plate. It just doesn't tickle me.

As far as the clapping thing; I've never heard or seen anything like that in my life. I've dropped a plate once in a Golden Corral and people stared, a few chuckled than got back to eating.

I'm surprised that they even noticed at a Golden Corral.

Most of the time, it's like pigs feeding at a trough, and I refuse to eat at one again, ever!!

I've seen that happen. I think it happens everywhere. I like to change it up though and often will start clapping when the waitress brings me my plate WITHOUT dropping it. She brings the plate over, sets it down on the table, and I stand up and start applauding. I look around and try to get other people to join in, but usually they don't. Suddenly, and I don't understand why, but usually she just stares at me rudely and walks off shaking her head. And the manager who said I can never come back to that Cheddar's thinks I'm the *******????
