That is interesting...because in Oklahoma, people cheer if someone drops dishes, glasses, anything that can break. I guess to make the person feel better about themselves...

Default I Doubt Anyone's Really Laughing

In my experience in restaurants, both in my local area and traveling, there's just usually some silence and a few pauses and brief stares from patrons. I would react silently and with quiet curiosity, but I wouldn't dare clap. I think on a couple of occasions, I quietly uttered to myself "Whoops" or "Way to go", but it was never anything stirring. When you hear dishes breaking, you can't help but react. If there's any ribbing, it's usually among the employees. Things happen and it didn't matter where I was.

I've never seen this either and I grew up in South East Texas. Now, here in my own house when something like that happens, it's another story

Any Aggies onboard? Used to be that if you dropped your cup/dish on the floor in the Sbisa dining hall (which is a huge open space with tiled floor and a huge echo), everybody in unison (hundreds of people usually) yell out PICK IT UP! They aren't being rude, it's just tradition. Plus, it's courtesy to pick it up

To be politically correct. Make sure person is O.K. Do the mature thing and resume whatever you were doing. But, if you need a good laugh-don't use someone else's discomfort for your gratification. Laugh at yourself, it's truly therapeutic

I don't remember clapping at restaurants in south Texas, but I do remember about one in 3 high school kids had the clap.
