Default Why live in Brownsville, TX?

Hi,
My mother was recently widowed and is originally from Brownsville, although she's not been there in 40+ years. I am a gay man in a long-term partnership, and after looking at the outstanding housing values in Brownsville we've been toying with the idea of retiring to the area, mostly to get out of the cold, as well as getting my mother to a warmer climate nearer to sea-level for health reasons! Pros/cons anyone would want to share? I found crime statistics about the area, and it's not bad, but i do understand the area is very impoverished...what's the attitude towards gay couples in Brownsville? Are the people friendly? My mother is now 73, and as I said hasn't been there in 40+ years...would it be a desirable area for seniors? She's half Hispanic and bi-lingual, and she thought the "machismo" attitudes might be trouble for us...thoughts on the subject? How's the health care situation? My mother currently live in Colorado Springs, we live in the Washington Park neighborhood of south Denver.
Any feedback would be appreciated. Jim

I'd stay in Colorado, if I were you. Since I'm not a homosexual, I don't have direct experience with how homosexuals are treated but I will share the fact that just two months after a gay club opened in Brownsville, it was torched in an arson fire. The owners decided it would be foolish to rebuild so they moved on. My hair stylist was gay and owned a salon in Brownsville but he himself wouldn't live there.

As for your mum, would she be living on her own or with y'all? I'm disabled, and when my only son went off to university, we decided it would not be advisable for me to live there by myself so I moved away, too. There are illegal immigrants who go door-to-door looking for work and some of them will steal things (outdoor furniture, tools, etc.) if you don't give them work. I would NOT want them to know I was there by myself, along with being crippled.

Add into the equation the threat of tropical storms and hurricanes in that area and it's just a situation you don't need to deal with. If I were Hispanic and had a big family in the area, I guess I'd see it differently but being pretty much on your own and not part of the dominant culture and its mentality makes it a different story. I'm really glad I moved away.

If you are really considering the Valley, your best bet is either South Padre Island or McAllen, but I agree with TeaTime.

that was just ONE gay club.

and that was a serial arsoist who did it.

he also burned part of an apartment complex and a bunch of palm trees.

he's been in and out of prison (last i heard in) since high school.

there are PLENTY of gay people in Brownsville and the rest of the valley too.
