The "new" Austin? That's kinda a stretch...

Thing is, Austin didn't set out to be Austin - it just sort of grew organically to be what it became. That's not something you can really orchestrate - the flavor will be distinctly different. Sort of like the difference between a restaurant hamburger and one made at home.

I do wish them luck, though.

Horse Lady I see you everywhere even in the real estate section!

Anyway to be Austin a place would need a combination of some universities ( Austin has 3) and the capital stuff. McAllen has neither and is a far cry from Austin in almost every feature. Austin is hilly and a big metro , McAllen is influenced by Mexico and farming. Although they both tend to vote Democratic, Austin does because of liberals often connected to UT ( incl former students) while McAllen does so because of its 85% Hispanic block voting.

Really I don't see any similarities.

ocean2026, my interests are varied and I follow them where they lead me.

It's true, 6th Street isn't "Austin" - it's just one tiny part that gets publicized far in excess of its real impact on the city.

The ONLY thing McAllen has over Austin is lower home prices. They will never be the "next" or "new" Austin, and any comparison is really just silly.

Maybe shooting for 'Austin Spring Break'. There are things about Austin that just don't, won't and never will happen in McAllen. Or anywhere else in Texas for that matter.

actually McAllen has South Texas College (one of the fastest growing colleges in the nation) and 5 miles north of McAllen there is UTPA in Edinburg... and what you said of McAllen being influential by Mexico and farming, the city is trying to change that slowly and about the farming part apparently you haven't been to McAllen lately....
