I was just in Midland today on business with Midland Fire Department. I ate at Prescotts near the airport. I don't know if it is on the Texas Monthly list but darn, the chicken fried steak and bisquits were killer. And the homemade Boston Cream Cheese cake - damn girl, I almost had a diabetic seizure.
I love the Permian Basin.
The sweet tea was great. And I am so excited about the changes occurring in downtown Midland. What a sweet, gorgeous town.

Is Prescott's new? I don't recall ever hearing about it while I was there!
I'm glad you like it. It's nice to hear positive comments about Midland, since there are those who never miss an opportunity to bash it!

I have travelled to Midland several times due to work, if it wasn't so far away from my wife's family in Lousiana, I wouldn't mind living there. The people seem to be extra friendly.

I totally agree. Everyone I met yesterday was happy to meet me. I laughed all afternoon. I think I met some of the nicest TSA folks - that's a new first.
Everyone in West Texas from Lubbock to Midland, Odesss and Amarillo and all points around are just some of finest, easy going folks you will ever meet. I'm lucky that I have neighbors who have that same sensibility here in Austin. But sometimes I wonder how some folks who call Texas home learned to be so rude and disrespectful.

mmmm... good chicken fried steak. Just can't be found in California. PoPos near Welfare should have been on the Texas Monthly list. I quit renewing my TM subscription when Kinky Friedman quit writing his column.

Awww. What a nice little video of the fried pickles at the Texan Cafe. I like that place and it's only a few blocks away.

My wife and I took a detour last Saturday on our way from Plano to Ruston La. and stopped at "The Shed" in Edom Texas. What a great experience! It is about 12 miles south of I-20, you take the Van/Edom exit and drive south on Hwy 314. I was shocked as we rolled into Edom (population 322) and saw an active little town. Not only does it have The Shed, but there is another restaurant across the street. We were further shocked when we had to give our name for a table.
But we weren't dissappointed with the food or service. I had the CFS, it was great (not as good as Mary's Cafe in Strawn TX, but still great), mashed potatoes, and black-eye peas. My wife had the fried fish, cabbage and b-e peas. Both of us ordered desert, which I hardly ever order, I had the coconut pie and the wife had chocolate pie. It was so good that we decided to order a complete pie of each and take it to the family get-together in Ruston. The cafe is very large with great parking area. We set across a friendly couple who drive 20 miles every Saturday to eat at the Shed. They also have a nice-sized gift shop.
We may not stop everytime that we head east on I-20, but it will be under serious consideration everytime that we see the Van/Edom exit.

I don't know whether or not it's on the list, but George's Cafe in Post, TX, about 40 miles southeast of Lubbock, has great food. I hope it's still there; I haven't been in Post for several years. I hope to be there next fall, if not sooner, on the way to NM.
