re: Missouri and the Confederacy...

It is a mistake to label Missouri as either a purely Union or purely Confederate state during the Civil War. This Wikipedia article sums it up better than I can:
Missouri in the American Civil War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For a time, the Confederate capital of Missouri was located in Marshall, TX.

I consider myself Southern, somewhat because of where the State is geographically and also because I grew up in South East Texas along the Gulf. I grew up in a really small town, lots of farms and ranches around, ate "southern" food and some cajun, grew up with Southern good manners...Most people speak with a Southern accent, not a western or midwestern one...I could probably come up with more reasons.

Texans consider themselves southerners because they are. What do you consider them?

Texans are Texans before they are Southerners.

I'm a Texan (native-born and bred), and I don't consider myself a Southerner, because I'm not - I'm a Texan, with all the baggage that carries with it.

LOL I thought this thread -- and beaten and stuffed to death topic -- had finally gone away for good!

I'm both a (native) Texan and a Southerner.

But regardless, there are so many different viewpoints -- all personal opinion and perspective -- on it that it is becoming yesterdays newspaper, as the saying goes!

Texas is a place; southern covers a large area ~ I get it. Aside from the fact a person is a Texan, Californian, North Dakotan (is that a noun ~ ? ), New Yorker, et al, they're still southerners, northerners, westerners, easterners, right? I just can't see it any other way, tunnel vision I guess.

Well, unless you ignore a GIANT chunk of Texas, you can't say that Texas is "southern". Just as, unless you ignore a large chunk of Texas, you can't say that Texas is "western". I still say that everyone ought to just bow to reality and have a region of the United States called "Texas".
