Looking at a job in Van Vleck and was curious about the area. Anything would be helpful.

I have family in Van Vleck. Bay City isn't one of my favorite places though. I would look at some nearby surrounding towns. But, I haven't been there in a long time so it could have cleaned up by now. It's just kind of not clean looking or something. I don't think the crime is bad though.

LIved in Bay City for six years, left in 2002. What are you looking for? It's actually built up a bit since we left, probably due to the nuclear plant work. We did a lot of driving when we lived there (Lake Jackson, Sugar Land) to go shopping etc. Wal-Mart's about it in Bay City. Restaurants are limited, Mexican and low-end Steak places, altough they have a new Chili's. The library is quite nice for the size of town. They don't have zoning and this was a problem. Some were buying empty house lots and placing 3-4 trailers on them and them renting these out to people. Really looks trashy. We lived in River Oaks (in Bay City, not in Houston). It was OK, but the first time we drove through it I told the realtor "No way". Lots of nice people, still have friends there. Theree trying to get some nature/birding tourism going. It is a major bird-flyway so that's on the right track. Good fishing in the bays. We did a lot of sailing out of Palacios and that was a lot of fun and not crowded.
