i'm not trolling for Houston. People internationally don't know Houston from Atlanta, Chicago, seattle, or any other "minor" city.
But people who think Chicago is well known outside the u.s. are delusional. It's NY, SF, then LA (in that order), and maybe Boston/DC. You talk to them about Chicago they're like oh...in Illinois? Where is that?

it's not there yet. Texas is a VERY important state and Houston, Dallas, Austin play a big part of it. Houston is the 4th largest
city in the U.S, but it will take time before Houston can be placed alongside the major players like New York, Chicago, L.A, San Francisco.

People don't care what mastercard says are the most economically important cities. People from foreign countries know about LA NY and SF for cultural reasons, not economic reasons. chicago is not known as well b/c its not important culturally.

Maybe that's true - but how do you know that? We had an exchange student here from Germany (one in a group of 50 - 15 years ago), and they were very well aware of Chicago and talked about all the good shopping there. They hoped they could get to either Chicago or New York to shop before returning to Dusseldorf.

Ok well in this case Houston and Chicago are known internationally because I know this one person from asia who was aware of Houston and knew lots about it [true story]. You don't have the words "Houston" be the first words spoke from the moon and not be known all over the world.

I really don't care enough about this to get into a "we're better than, bigger than, more well known than," about Chicago vs. Houston - that's just silly. I don't even live in Chicago. I just don't get why so many Houston posters have to try to tear down or minimize other cities. What's the reason behind this - the only thing I can think of is jealousy that Chicago is bigger. I know that people proud of Houston would not want to live in Chicago, and don't feel jealous of those who do. In the same respect, if you're living in Chicago, you're probably not jealous of those who are in Houston. Live and let live.
Also, how can anyone say with authority that Europeans don't know about Chicago, anymore than they can say they know about any other city. My brother lives in a Chicago suburb, and he travels to Europe very frequently on business (different countries). I've talked to him about this, and he said that everywhere he has gone, when he tells people he's from Chicago, there hasn't been one person that wasn't familiar with Chicago. Many of them talked about the skyline. That doesn't mean everyone in Europe knows about Chicago, anymore than everyone knows about Houston. What's the point of this, and the need to try to tear down Chicago?????

It is pretty much known that Chicago is overshadowed by NYC,LA, and SF. I don't have to belittle or tear down Chicago when I think it is doing a good job doing that by itself [Crime rate and losing population to suburbs]. Chicago suffers from the same problem as Houston does, lack of publicity and media. We only get media when something bad has happened [Hurricane Ike in HOU and The Hudson Family murder in CHI].
