Every time I go to Ohio, my family starts stereotyping. Now my uncle is in Calif. and that is a whole other story(they stereotype him to and he does it right back). But I have had family I never met said they didn't want their kids to meet my family because they heard we were from Texas and thought we would mess them up. They thought we didn't know what it's like to live in a city or have nice pretty trees and all that. We took them here a few years ago and they were actually surprised that it wasn't exactly what they expected. But once they go back they tend to forget...
I've had more people actually think it's cool I'm from Texas and chat me up on what the weather is like and what there is to do, but that doesn't mean I haven't had some rude comments.

The worst is going to the UK or France and telling people you're from Texas->

yes that's true. The UK doesn't like Texans at all. In England they replace the word stupid with Texan.
They also think Texans are all bible thumpers.
Having George Bush as pres didn't help the reputation of Texas very much either.

Natalie Maines is one of the Dixie Chicks.
Again, to the other poster, George Bush was from Texas; he just wasn't born here.

It's a difference of opinion. I say he lived in Texas, but was not "from" Texas. He wasn't born here, and he didn't spend a significant portion of his formative years here--he was in CT. Even when he did live here, he did not get a typical Texan upbringing--regular down home folk in Texas don't send their kids to Kinkaid.
However, I do think Bush has contributed to the Texas and Texan bashing of late because he portrays himself as a Texan.

Yes he does. I didn't know he wasn't a Texan. I wonder how many do? He kind of talks like one too. He seems to have a subltle accent.

It's very affected. He lived in my neighborhood pre-94 (albeit in a much swankier part) and most people said it got thicker as he got deeper into his presidential campaign.
He sounds like someone who speaks with his mouth half closed. He doesn't really have the "twangy" accent that would reflect on someone raised in Midland. He really sounds like a transplant's kid who is trying too hard. I don't doubt some of it is genuine, but he doesn't even say "y'all" publically, which makes it entirely suspect.
