Is Wellington Texas a good place to live?
Hi everyone, I am from Massachusetts, and have been in Downeast Maine for 4 years, and HATE it here! winters are too long!! Wellington seemed to have great real estate prices! Even better than here, but here it's cheap, because it is remote, poor, and everything is falling apart. I dislike a lot of humidity, and long cold winters. Does anyone here have any feed back for me on Wellington, or other places in Texas, Arizona, or New Mexico that might suit me? I need 3 bedrooms, and don't mind renting. (not over $600 a month) I am on Disability for a degenerative bone condition. Thanks!

Wellington....low humidity, short cold winters. But the shines nearly every day even in the coldest part of winter, gets some snow. Lots of wind year round. Tthere is a good little hospital and doctors with good reps in Childress (about 30 mi. away)...I don't know about Wellington's. The nearest full service medical facilities are in Amarillo (130 mi) but it's an easy drive on the interstate....it's a large medical center, 2 good hospitals, every kind of specialty. Most of the small towns in the Panhandle (that's what that whole top area northern area of Texas is called) have access to CareFlite choppers for emergencies. Childress has a new Super WalMart, don't know about Wellington, sorry.
There are very few trees in the countryside but there are trees in town around the houses. It's vast, wide-open spaces in that part of the country....if you're not used to that it gives some people whatever the opposite of claustraphobia is!
If you have aches and pains because of your bone disease, you might be more comfortable farther south in West Texas....West Texas is dry, low humidity and the farther south you go the warmer it is....much milder winters than the Panhandle area and not quite as windy. You might look at Coleman, Brownwood, Cisco.....near enough to Abilene TX and San Angelo for medical services (less than a 100 miles) but small and inexpensive places to live.
Best wishes to you.......

My question is why Wellington? Do you have family there? I have a couple relatives who live in Wellington, and it's remote, poor, and everything is falling apart. I would suggest a town in the hill country in Central Texas. They have warmer winters, less brutal summers, and better scenery.

why wellington?
Thank you for all your responses! My husband and I are in our fifties, and not in the greatest health. We want to get away, from these awful winters! The problem is, we are no well placed financially, and have never been out of New England. We are thinking we would like to be in a place that is in the country,(not the wilderness!) and is not humid. I have never experienced dry heat, but I am guessing it beats humidity. we also want cheap rent, and mild winters. I figured Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, might be good places to start looking. Wellington is a place I just happened upon, which caught my eye because of the cheap real estate. Any suggestions from anyone? I will check out the hill country of Texas, as you suggested. What counties would that be? Thank you for your consideration. I am a pyrographic Artist, retired nurse, and can do my artwork anywhere.(Wood on Water Wood-Burned Gifts and Home Furnishings ~ Eastport, Maine) Thanks everyone!

I highly recommend you check out San Saba or anywhere in San Saba County e.g. Richland Springs. If you can get your hands on this month's issue of Hill Country Magazine, it has a WONDERFUL article on the town/area.
Other suggestions: Hamilton (Mills County), Gatesville (Coryell County), Lampasas (Lampasas County)... small very safe and very inexpensive towns with EXCELLENT small Level IV Trauma Centers, with close proximity to Level I Trauma Centers in Waco (Providence)) and the renowned Scott & White in Temple and Level II Darnall Army Medical Center in Ft Hood (yes, civilians are taken there if needing the nearest trauma center, at least for stabilization, before transport to a civilian facility . As an RN myself, I know the importance of having a GOOD hospital within close proximity, and Hamilton, Gatesville, and Lampasas have fine small hospitals. And Gatesville has probably one of the BEST nursing homes around-I am 44 years old and probably need to put myself on the waiting list ha ha!
In North Texas, Graham in Young County, has an EXCELLENT well-funded hospital for a town its size. 45 min to 1 hour to Ft Worth or Wichita Falls for Level II Trauma, or 1-1.5 hours to Dallas for Level I Trauma (Parkland)...or a short CareFlight away.
Another noteworthy mention, Burnet in Burnet County. Nice town in the Hill Country, modern hospital (Seton Hall), best HUD housing I have ever seen (i thought they were luxury condos!!), and proximity to Austin's major medical centers for higher level of medical care.
If living in an area somewhat far a drive from a Level I or II trauma center, I would highly recommend buying CareFlight/LifeFlight insurance. Very low annual fees for free helicopter transport if you ever need it.

"AYUH"! you are more than welcome. let me know if you have any other questions i can help you with!
and remember, just about anywhere you move to, within the State of Texas, you cant go wrong (except a couple places..and i wont even mention them because the folks from that area of Texas get very defensive).

Hi I used to live in Amarillo Texas. My Husband and I moved to Jal New Mexico for his job. The people here are unlike anywhere I have ever lived. It is like one big family. There are approx. 2000 people. They have a Senior center where you if you want to, can play bumper pool in the mornings and drink coffee. Or if you wish, you can come down and play games. They are big on 42. They also have music night once a month where a band comes in and plays. They also go to some of the surrounding towns on different nights to other bands play Country, bluegrass and Gospel. They also have A monthly breakfast where everyone brings something to eat and visits for a while. They also plan trip to different things. There is Christmas on the Pecos. Where you take a boat ride and look at Christmas lights on the homes along side the river. The housing. There are some house for sale right now going for Approx. 20,000.00-80,000.00 There is a Three bedroom, two bath, living area, den, dinning room, laundry room, covered carport, covered patio, with a building out back going for 55,000.00 Call the chamber of commerce (575-395-2620) or City of Jal (575-395-2222) Taxes on our house which is three bedroom, one bath, kitchen, den, formal living area, garage, RV port, little building out back is 234.00 a yaer. Oh the weather is nice. Today it is to be in the seventies. There is very little humidity if any. There has not been any snow this year. The most I have seen in five years is 8 inches and that lasted for two days. I promise you will not regret it. My sister Melinda lived in Wellington and did not care for it. I don't remember why. Have a good day Cindy

Hi Cindy, We have actually been looking at NM also. Is Jal anywhere near Albequerce? (sp) Does it get unbearably hot? What does the landscape there look like? We are looking to rent a three bedroom house. I want to be somewhere that is not so hot, that I have to stay in airconditioning all summer. Does any of thie fit where you are? Thanks!
