Outlying Abilene areas
Well I've been given a few options at relocation here in the past few months, and Abilene is one them. I'm looking at an option that was put in front of me for a position in Abilene. I use to live in western Ft. Worth, but have been living in Missouri for the past 6 years. I am not really a city person, and enjoy living in the country, hunting, fishing, target practicing, just being outdoors in general, playing with the dogs, riding horses, running a few head of cattle, etc. I have done a little research and it seems that the western and northern neighboring Abilene community areas have descent land and housing prices and the schools appear to be okay from what I can tell. I guess I'm just looking for any general information that anyone could give on some of these areas. Or perhaps places to try and avoid. Looking to stay within about 30 miles(+/-) from Abilene. Not looking to save the world here, just getting my family back to our roots and enjoy the Texas life we once had. Thanks in advance for any replies.

As long as you have a job in Abilene, take a look around Anson, I 've stayed there a lot for work. Its small, friendly, two good cafes, good schools, small town values, there is a grocery store and Dollar General for some of the basics until you travel to an Abilene WalMart, and low crime. They have a lake north of town for fishing, and there is a gun range SE towards Abilene. Yes, there is not much growth there and the downtown needs revitalized.

Check out Buffalo Gap. The scenery is gorgeous and it's not far from Abilene State Park. If you can't find something affordable in Buffalo Gap, then try Tuscola, home town of Colt McCoy!

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll take a look at that area more in depth and see what it has to offer.

Well thank you, I appreciate that. We hope to find it too!
I really haven't ruled anything out yet, as the only basis I have so far is land and housing prices. Seems most of the schools in the Abilene area okay.

10-4, and I agree wtih you. I had seen a few pictures of the BG area and it does look quite enticing. I'm afraid that the home and property values will be out of our price range though, at least from what I've seen thus far. We're only looking for between 20-40 acres though. Possibly more if the price was right, but we're not looking for a huge parcel or anything. I'd like to take a trip to Abilene and then visit these places and see what kind of feeling I get. You know, kinda like a first, or gut instict.

You'll definitely find something and I think you'll like the Abilene area. I just fell in love with it the first time we visited. The Callahan Divide that borders the city is so pretty! Abilene schools are very good, and one of the reasons I mentioned Tuscola is that their Jim Ned School District is highly regarded, as well. Some of the rural school districts are having trouble making ends meet but Jim Ned seems to be fine.
