So to you, everyone from outside the South is out of touch with "regular Americans" and yet you say "Yankees" are the ones that think they are better than everyone else? Sounds like some real Sarah Palin-style "Real Americans" arrogance to me.

I'll agree with that except for the Sarah Palin arrogance. I like the woman.

Seriously though, you hit the nail on the head. It's so funny, but yet so profoundly sad all in one.

Yes, I do believe that the social viewpoint of many Californians and New England liberals is far to the left of the average American. I'm also to the left of the average American, but not to that extent.

"Real Americans" and "regular Americans" are two different things altogether. I'm not claiming that Yankees aren't American, just that they tend to be to the left of the average "regular" American.

Original families from Texas are still conservative. It is the way we were raised. Traditions held through the generations and are proud of being a texan. Things have changed as the older generations have started to die off and a new generation has a more open mind. I also believe that as different families from other states move here...slowly...our state is changing to something I don't recognize.

It's certainly getting a little more rough out there. Manners have been thrown to the wind. About 4 years ago I noticed that honking in Uptown, the minute the light turn green began. You see strangers being extremely rude to one another for almost no reason in public places. Impatience is kicking in, and that's not very Texan.

Uptown Houston / Galleria? Honking in traffic--- you don't say! Definitely been going on longer than 4 years.

BTW I never thought the Galleria area was ever very "Texan," stereotypically speaking. Very cosmpolitan and very plastic is more like it.

I admit, I have somewhat of a prejeduce against Texas for various reasons, but reading what people say on this forum has greatly changed my mind and I do not dislike it as much anymore.

It seems like Texas has a reputation for being very conservative, politically (more so than other southern states) and very "tough" and "competitive", I guess you'd say. My biggest question is, is this accurate? Is it really any more conservative than other states like Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, etc.? I used to think that it very much was, but the more I've thought about it, the more I've realized that Texas a very diverse, complex state, with many different demographic factors, and you can't generalize a state with 24 million people (2nd most populous state in the country) in any way.

So obviously, like any other state, Texas has many different geographic regions and areas that are all different. So my question for Texans is, when you compare apples to apples, are big cities in Texas (Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, etc.) more conservative than big cities in other states? Are small towns in Texas more conservative/narrow-minded than other small towns? Are metropolitan areas as whole (Dallas and Houston) more conservative than other metropolitan areas as a whole? This is what has intrigued me the most.

Again, this is not an anti-Texas thread, I'm geniunely interested in the perspectives of people who have spent a significant amount of time in Texas.

what do you mean by narrowminded? i have lived in Texas, Mississippi, SC but also in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New York and Oregon. I can tell ya that narrow minded is not a trait common to conservatives alone. In the more liberal states like Oregon, Mass, VT, NY and California if you say anything that liberals dont like they can be hateful, attacking, cursing, insulting, and down right racist and hostile.

so i dont think texas is anymore intolerant or narrowminded than the more liberal places no.

conservative yes it is, narrowminded well that goes both ways

I think we who grew up in the south and in Texas are more conservative yes, but i think we are as proud of our conservatism as the northeast is of their liberalism.

its a choice , its what one grows up with, believes and values. if you like liberalism thats fine, and if we love conservatism thats fine also
