Yep, pretty much. Drives people nuts that Texans really don't fit into their little boxes so they do their deadlevel best to make it happen or, failing that, to SEE them as fitting into those boxes even if the reality isn't there.

Right on. The caricatures of Texans by both the media and those unfamiliar with the state FIRSTHAND are really amazing to me. So inaccurate. It's insulting. But like my mama told me, usually when someone is belittling you, they are either jealous or they feel threatened.

OK, now this thread is just taking on a self-congratulatory tone

The thing is, it's the loudmouthed right wing demogogues who tend to draw the attention of the news media, because - for one thing - they play to it. And the fact is that the State is presently in the grip of an extremely reactionary bunch of Republicans and Tea Partiers, with Rick Perry as their great high priest.

Yes, Texas is a great deal more complex than the stereotypes (most places no doubt are). However, it will continue to be stereotyped in the present atmosphere of sensationalist political posturing by the likes of Rick Perry et al.

Ron Paul has segued ever farther to the extreme right over the the span of his political career. He's a right wing bigot pretending to be a libertarian.

He has no belief in a real role for government; he has cozied up to the religious right in his articulation of a stance denying equal rights for LGBT persons; he and/or his staff have engaged in active race-baiting and racist rhetoric in Paul's constituent newsletter and other publications. He's a wicked, abominable old man who is quickly turning into Pat Robertson: a delusional, self-aggrandizing ninny.

What is your idea of the real role of government. Does it match the limitations spelled out in the Constitution?

Ahhh yeah, that one again. Got news for you, DocJ, it is not just the "religious right" (whatever you mean by that) which objects to legalizing homosexual marriage. According to voting patterns, it is the majority...even in liberal states. Yeppers. Most folk apparently believe that the institution of marriage should be defined as between a man and woman. You would have a case if in even ONE instance, that voters in the states had approved it. But they havent.

And also? What right under the Bill of Rights do straight people have that gay people do not have?

Oh lord, will you pleeeeeeze give concrete examples of what you mean by "race-baiting" and "racist rhetoric"??? What the hell does that mean...other than nothing at all...?

if LGBT loses a vote for homosexual rights in california - the liberal capital of the us - that should tell you something about how many actually oppose homosexuality.
