Where In TEXAS?????????
Hello All: Well, we're looking at relocating for a second time. We're orginally from Central California, so heat doesn't bother us. We currently live in Northern Minnesota and we're tired of the COLD.
Ideally we're looking for a decent place to retire that has warm/hot summers and mild winters, someplace close to civilization, near a recreational lake, and close to a college for our son.
Any ideas/suggestions?

If heat and HUMIDITY do not bother you, anywhere along the coast to the Rio Grande Valley will work for you. If you prefer more of a dry heat, southwestern Texas from Laredo to Presidio might be your calling. Do note though, that this area is largely hispanic, so there will be a large cultural difference. My choices would be Austin, San Antonio, Victoria, or Corpus Christi.
Just my .02.

Why these choices?
"My choices would be Austin, San Antonio, Victoria, or Corpus Christi."
Mexicans/Hispanic people don't bother me, hell I don't care what color you are BUT I don't want to move in a gang-infested area.
What places have a decent college, Population in that 100K to 200K range, and are close to a lake?

Austin and San Antonio are the two largest cities w/ many suburbs and smaller cities nearby. Both offer an abundance of options, great weather (as per your description) AND several colleges/universities nearby. NONE of these would put you in a "gang infested" area unless you picked the small area of these two large cities to live in that would see more of that "culture". But you don't have to live in those cities. As mentioned, there are MANY options around this area that give you the smaller population and close to a large city center. The area between Austin and San Antonio is growing by leaps and bounds and pretty soon it will be solid development between the two.
Here are a few cities/towns in that area to check out:
New Braunfels
Round Rock
San Marcus
Georgetown
Seguin
Pearsall
Floresville
Leon Springs
Boerne
*this is just a SMALL sampling of areas to pick from in that vicinity. These are not even the suburbs of Austin/San Antonio.
A few nearby Colleges/Universities in and around Austin & San Antonio:
University of Texas (Austin)
Texas State University
Our Lady of the Lake
St Marys University
The University of Texas at San Antonio
Texas Luthern

SFA and UT are two TOTALLY different schools. SFA is in Nacogdoches. University of Texas is in Austin.
What is NOW known as Texas State University used to be known as Southwest Texas State (located in San Marcos).

Those cities I mentioned are no more gang infested than any other city of those sizes. In fact, they are often considered among the finer cities in the state to reside in. I was giving you a personal preference, as these are cities I often visit, and feel they are a good area climatically, geographically, family oriented, with an abundance of activities. If you are wanting something smaller, the cities momof2dfw mentioned are excellent choices.

Georgetown. Southwestern University right here in town, plus several other colleges/universities a short drive away. Lake Georgetown, or a shortish drive to the Highland Lakes. Small town ambiance but with amenities, and a quick drive into Austin for those of a larger community.

Waco,TX is a beautiful city medium sized city that is going through a building boom right now. It is centrally located between Austin and Dallas, and you have Lake Waco, which is always full of people during the summer swimming and jet skiing. The suburbs are quite nice and safe. I believe Hewitt was voted one of the best places to live. Also home to Baylor University, and two community colleges (MCC and TSTC). The shopping is good for a city it's size and the winters are mild with snow/sleet maybe once a year.

The cities that fit this description are Lubbock, Waco, Abilene, College Station/Bryan, Tyler, and Denton. You can't go wrong with any of these. You need to visit them and decide what you like.
