The California fiscal shortfall this year is $41,000,000,000.00. No wonder people are moving! Let's all take a step back, a deep breath and appreciate how effed that situation is. The public services are going to take a wallop, and the flight of real estate tax revenue along with the flight of actual residents is going to send that state down the tubes. The smart ones are getting out while they can, even at a loss.

Well, most of the folks in this area are either military or working for the military. i dont think the recession is hitting this area that hard(Killeen metro) , home of the largest military installation in the world,-since military doesnt get layed off, and the soldiers keep getting bigger and bigger sign-on and re-enlistment bonuses, that feeds into the economy. There is tremendous growth here-subdivisions keep popping up here everywhere. construction-i guarantee there aint no shortage of jobs in construction/labor.

I think they already fixed their state. They'll now try to fix Texas.

Good point. If government is biggest part of the economy of an area, it is somewhat immune vs the rest of us here w/o such a buffer.

My Dad met a girl online and moved down to Center in Shelby County bout 2 years ago. After a couple of rough patches, he now has a steady job and is doing pretty good for himself. (he lost the girl which was the best first step in the right direction, lol).
I went and visited just last week for a bit and now I am looking into how soon I can get down there. Its how I always wanted to live again: I grew up a country rural girl in Germany and am living in the busy busy subburbs of NJ right now. I'd love to be able to get some more peace and slow time in my life.

Honestly, I wish everyone all the luck in the world, and I'd rather all of you come here and try to find happiness, and work, etc....than stay where you are in poverty, jobless, etc.... but all of this migration to Texas is going to eventually effect us too. I personally don't like congested areas, and love Texas because I was born and raised here on a ranch and it's in my blood. The days of those ranches are comming to an end quickly though with all of the crazy growth, and rises in taxes to the point that no one can afford to pay them even with the produce of their land. By by little man, and hello big city in other words. Most of the out of towners I've seen on city-data praise the big city so more than likely making Texas into that will suit them just fine, but not me. Im afraid our economy here in Texas is next also because of the migration........

Hey, if the economy has sapped your job too, I think you should drop an application with these guys: Texas Tourism
You'd make a GREAT spokesperson.

Well ulsterscot I'm one of those "bleeding" Ohio citizens! I too can't wait to escape. You're dead on, our state/city gov't are unbelievable and it's only going to get worse. I work accounting for a roofing company and Hurricane Ike saved this company, at least for the time being. I was ready to quit due to lack of work. All the foreclosures/lost jobs has hit everyone. So now with the storm we have work in to the spring. Not sure what will happen beyond that. I'm not going to worry about it. Ohio is one of I believe one or two states that still manages the worker's comp. Again, unbelievably broken system! One small accident threw our rates from 9% to 26%. So what are these govs going to do? If they continue to pummel the companies with taxes they'll run everyone out of business, thus no on left to fund the big fat welfare state!
So WillysB I too was one of those yanks to flee the north in the 80s, headed to SA. My mistake was coming back up here. Another quote I'm sure you all know and love by Davey Crockett, I have this mug w/quote on my office desk, and IT WILL be stuck on my car after my trip to W Texas in Feb:
You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas!
