Default Lubbock versus Amarillo: Which City is Better?

Heads up "Hub City" fans and "Center City" fans:

Some of you may have seen the many threads on Houston versus Dallas: Which city is better? Growing up in Houston, I was distinctly aware of the in-state rivalry between Houston and Dallas. We Houstonians saw ourselves as more "cosmopolitan" than Dallas, and at the same time possibly more "blue-collar" than Dallas, and the debate raged.

But when I moved to Lubbock in 2003, I noticed that Lubbock had a regional competition with Amarillo. I then moved to Amarillo in 2006 and the regional competition was confirmed! When I was in Lubbock, the Lubbockites saw their city as more advanced with more opportunities. When I moved to Amarillo, the Amarillites saw themselves as more down to earth and blue-collar, and Lubbock as high and mighty, especially having Texas Tech there.

Now I am posting this thread for some thoughtful discussion and not to personally insult anyone, because I have had some great experiences in both Lubbock and Amarillo. I prefer Amarillo though (possibly because there are more Sooner fans here! LOL!) Amarillo seems to have more of an "Oklahoma" influence than Lubbock. I also like the possibility of more snow in Amarillo.

Give this a shot! And I am inviting all TEXANS to post a thought!

Both are nice. I think that Lubbock has slightly more to offer with a big 12 university, more entertainment, etc.
I think Amarillo has more in the way of manufacturing, though. I prefer the Hub because it's slightly milder in winter and due to its proximity to Tech .

My husband goes to both for work. He was in Lubbock last week, but of course he doesn't get to go out and see everything being the truck driver he is but on occasion if he has to sit long enough he'll venture out. He seems to like both equally, but said Lubbock seems to have more things to do than Amarillo.

Neither! Lived in Amarillo, visited Lubbock many times. Hated the place. Flat dustbowls, little greenery, and everyone we met had been married 3 or 4 times. The only positive thing I can say about the area is that Palo Duro Canyon is gorgeous!

I'd probably choose Lubbock over Amarillo, but both are fine places. I really like Palo Duro Canyon though so it's really a tossup to me. Both cities have low humidity, which is something that I really like.

Default Another Difference

Here's another difference between the two cities that I have noticed. Compared to Lubbock, Amarillo has a better starting salary for people with professional degrees. I can personally attest to the fact that Lawyers start out at a lower salary in Lubbock versus Amarillo. I have also heard from a Doctor friend of mine that that is the case with Doctors too.

I have no idea why this is the case. Lubbock is overrun with lawyers compared to Amarillo. Lubbock has a population of 250k while Amarillo has a population of 175k. However, Lubbock has about twice as many lawyers as Amarillo (About 750 versus 400). I suppose supply and demand is the answer. The more lawyers, the less work for each individual.
I have thought that the reason that lawyers choose to stay in Lubbock (there is a law school there) rather than move to say Amarillo is for two reasons. The first is that they may already have their family and a house there. The second is that maybe they enjoy Texas Tech and Lubbock. Both reasons aren't good enough for me. I go where the money is.

Finally, a second difference is the activities offered at both cities. I have definately noticed that Lubbock offers more. For instance, there is a summer music fest on main street in Lubbock, and a Fraternity Country fest somewhere in Lubock County. The music scene in Amarillo is almost non-existant. Football and basketball games in Lubbock (anyone want to see new Coach Knight get angry?). There is a bar strip, unlike Amarillo (I don't go to bars, though).

Amarillo! I mean if it wasnt for Texas Tech Lubbock wouldnt be nothing but a dusty, flat, cotton west Texas town. Amarillo is more city-ish in my oppinon, in Lubbock eveything is centered around Texas Tech and they do a great deal to the city and its population. Amarillo is on the historic Route66/I-40 a major interstate and plus Amarillo is the main regional city in the Tex-Okla-New Mex Pannhandle plus for a city it size it has a decent (but old) skyline unlike Lubbock. Its clean, hillier, the people are more friendlier and can drive and it has more seasonal weather and beautiful sunsets. Lubbock can very dusty. Amarillo is, but not as much.

I guess this thread slipped by me a while ago, but I'll reply anyway. I just simply think Lubbock is the nicer city. Amarillo just seems run down and dirtier, and I've yet to be there when it isn't reeking of cow manure. Lubbock has nicer parks and more of them, more advanced medical facilities, way more cultural activities, better education (both in primary and secondary), and more diversity (with over 100 nationalites represented). Amarillo has Palo Duro Canyon and a better downtown.
(Hey, what kind of Amarilloans/Lubbockites would we be if we didn't rag on each other every once in a while! BTW, the friendliness, drivers and sunsets are completely debateable! )

I've lived in both. I would live in Lubbock again. I can't say the same for Amarillo.

I would rather live in Lubbock. My reasons are the milder winters and it is closer to the big cities in the state than Amarillo.Another reason would be the higher percentage of my brothers and sisters in the Churches of Christ.I would be more likely to live in Lubbock(or stay if I'm already there) after college due to Tech and Lubbock Christian University. My goal is to be a professor.I'll be fine wherever God puts me.
