best area for single male professional in Tyler area
Will probably be moving to Tyler in a few months. I'm a single male professional, not too much into nightlife scene. I'm an open-minded conservative who enjoys company of people with different beliefs and backgrounds.
I'll be working a bit NE of the 271 loop, don't mind a 20-25 minute drive to work as long as I live close to some decent supermarket or super walmart. I'd also like a home in a good school district and close to an indoor aquatic center if possible. Anyone with good ideas? It'll be good to be back in Texas.

There are many loft apartments in downtown you might wanna check out. The nearest aquatic center would be in ETMC's Olympic Plaza in the medical center district about 2 miles away.

You talked of "home" as in home to buy are rent? Maybe, apartment first, to know where you want to be more permanent? I think you mean Highway 271, if your talking about up near Interestate 20 Northeast of Tyler or do you mean inside "The Loop" which we mean Loop 323 that encircles much of Tyler. As you come on into the near city town by way of 271. If this is 271 you mean, then there is very little I think you would care for in the Northeast Section of Tyler. Most of the "better" areas are from Downtown going South. Next to downtown is the Azeala Historic District, where many singles which are primaily medical professional and retires and young couples live gays live a good mix, many red brick covered streets, could be priacy but you can find a view places to rent. Going South and Southeast Southwest are the newer areas where you reach the far South (newest) Many apartments there if you want some names just ask.
Now, the "Place to be" sorta, serveral is The Cascades development all news many options to chose from starting at $675 per month, most have garages may be some golf condos left (40 two story buildings) this is a upscale area West of Downtown only four miles on a small hundred year old lake. Many million dollar homes some for 500,000 would be several times that in many East West Coast cities the areas is about 2 square miles (seveal miles of streets) 14 story condo. Many young professionals there. Spa, country club, Marina, etc. Lake 4 story Townhomes from about $180,000. Tyler really doesn't have many nite clubs anyway. Winary where many meet and also lite food etc. Tyler is now no smoking even in any clubs, bars, except tobaco shops I have to go but will attach a post I had just put on here today. Will be glad to answer anything if I can. Churches etc or not
Hi: Depends where you a moving from as to what you expect/need for the school salary to be. Also, what it cost to live where you are from, it could be a lot less than Tyler.
As far as cities, go Nac. is more laid back and Historic Place a nice small/old downtown area, a college town, really deep in the Piney Woods. I like it.
Tyler is on the edge of the Piney Woods with many more huge Oak trees, gently rolling hills, with pasture areas a well. Tyler has historic Azalea District too very modern 14 story high rise condo - major shopping, very expensive to not so expensive areas to live in, yes we do have our older "not so kept up" areas, yes some drawbacks here. One is not the property tax rate , it's the lowest in the state of any city over 15,000 population rate is .20 per $100 dollar evaluation.
Tyler has The Univesity of Texas at Tyler with the on campus Cowan Performing Arts Center with major plays that stop in Dallas also coming here, Season packages and special events. The East Texas Symphony is here that compares fairly favorabaly with the Houston Symphony, I lived in Houston 20 years. Has a really nice zoo.
Tyler is medical center of East Texas with the only Level One Truama Center,ETMC, in the area sds well as another Level II Regional Center, TMF. Many specialist here. And finally, many people find Tyler beautiful with the Azaleas,Dogwoods.Tulips and the largest Municipal Rose Garden the nation. Come take a look, of course it would be much nicer in the Spring or thereafter, it does look like winter with only the Pine trees green, we have four seasons with a mild winter.
Many people live just outside Tyler and in Whitehouse,Bullard, Lindale.
If you have anyother questions. I'll try to answer them or refer you to someone.

It really depends on whether you are looking to buy or rent. Also, your age. You also mention that you would like a good school district? Should I assume you have custody of children? I will tell you that Lindale ISD has a wonderful and highly rated school district. Lindale is 10 miles north of Tyler right on I-20 with easy access to DFW and Shreveport. We also have a Super Walmart and a beautiful Lowe's, along with Brookshires. If access to the DFW area/airport is important to you I would advise you to move north of Tyler. It will cut off 30 minutes travel time. Tyler has become a very up and coming city and for the most part has left behind the "good old boy's" attitudes that so many believed haunted it.

Even only 2 -3 miles from city limits to city limits. I agree with what Destin said and yes it would be almost 30 minutes from far South Tyler to I-20.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and information. Mark, yes, I guess I meant I will be working somewhere along 271 toward I-20, NE of 323 loop.
I am single with no children --- want to live in an area with a good school district for accompanying amenities and resale value of home ---- yes, looking for a single family home but would consider nice townhome. I'll stay away from condos unless I could get a sweet deal.
But I'll take info on apartments also as some have offered. Thanks. I think I'm more and more interested in Lindale area after doing a bit of research. My price range for home is prob max 160-170K. I know this will eliminate me from some nice areas.
Church, social-wise, I'd be interested if there are PCA (Presbyterian Church of America) churches in the area..... also being close to a nice library and/or bookstore would be a plus. I know, lots of requests. Thanks in advance for any other ideas.

Carpe. Churches - First Pres.,First Pres (Orthodox),Fifth Street Pres. of America,Highland Res Church (USA) per the phone book. You do need to maybe consider Bullard, Whitehouse ISD. rating really good. Now, Lindale has many nice homes in the 160-170 range. I'll leave more information up to "Destin". Whitehouse, Bullard have probably a larger selection of homes in your price range, simply because of an overall total larger selection of homes. I would be surprised if you couldn't buy a home you would be very pleased with. Be careful home sells fell 17% last year but prices overall went up 7%. If there is a slight reduction in prices, it will be temporay here. When the national commercial and economic crises ends there are many projects planned. Some a few nice/new townhomes in the 170,000 price range. Library - Barnes and Noble, Hastings are in Central Tyler. There are small libaries, check phone book.
If you want apartment first, which just maybe be good idea to really study the area and be sure you want to stay. Most all apartments again, or in South Tyler. Large selection almost 2,000 units became available in 3 pretty good sized complexes, all gated. Really you can almost tell which are better by ads in phone book. Just neat to norrow down the part of South Tyler you like best.
Gotta run again. Anything else, try to help. Mark

Thanks Matt. I'm guessing that was a slight slight at Tyler by Txstate.
I guess my original question should have been, "Where do most single professional people in Tyler area live?" . I guess the answer could still be Dallas or Shreveport , since from what I've learned Tyler is exactly halfway between the two.
Carpe out.
