It's in Texas, and it's a much maligned city, so that automatically makes it ten times worse and justifiable for those who wish to speak on it.

I'm still trying. Getting closer and closer. Started in Houston and now in El Paso. Weather here is so much better and the property taxes are almost as good.
One day soon I'll be where I want to be. Northern New Mexico or Southern Colorado.

People move away from Texas all the time. It's just that these people considering moving out of state would be posting in other state or world forums, not the Texas forum.

While that may be so, I think its good for people who only look at the Texas forum to see how others feel about it, once they are away from the state. I find it interesting how many of these folks that have moved still watch the Texas threads, and post. So, its good to see why they moved, and if they are or aren't happy about it. Or, alternatively, if you live in Texas still, its fascinating to see why you would want to leave the state, whether its for economic, political, social, climatic, etc.
Actually, it really puts things in perspective reading through these past 8 pages of posts. The dynamics at work here make for a wonderful read, and I have learned alot. Thus, I am highly appreciative of the posts thus far regarding the topic.

I was born and raised in Texas. My mother's family were ranchers-- by the time I was 18, I could not only ride pretty well, but had had spent summers stringing barb wire, fixing windmills, and branding more cattle than I care to count. My dad was BOI (born on the Island) and his father was an early conspirator with the Maceos to smuggle liquor into Galveston during Prohibition. I'm a Texas ex and will always bleed burnt orange. I know the correct (i.e., Texan) way to pronounce "Mexia," "Brazos," and "San Jacinto" (but still can speak some pretty fluent border Tex-Mex). I still get goosebumps when I go to the Alamo. I am and will always be a Texan.
I set those things out to establish my bona fides. I left Texas a decade ago because I wanted to (life and job changes), and I don't regret the move. I fit in better in a college town in the midwest in a variety of social and political ways. I hate the cold but treasure the other three seasons. Every time I come back to Texas to visit family, I'm a little more eager than the last time to get back home. The political discourse grates on my nerves a little more each time I'm exposed to it. I know I fit in better here than in the place where I was born.
It's a big country and there's room for most everyone.
