do you plan on eating good bbq on this trip? that could start a whole new destination discussion. I'd vote for coopers in llano (original location) and new branfels (just opened).

BBQ @ City Market (Luling), Kreuz Market (Lockhart), Smitty's Market (Lockhart in the old Kreuz building) Salt Lick (Driftwood), Woody's (Centerville)have to be on the BBQ list. Woody's is on I45 between Dallas/Houston and the others are 'around' Austin.
Good BBQ all over Texas - it's one of our top sports, finding good BBQ joints.

I read this thread twice - I've been to every single town mentioned. That's amazing when you consider that all parts of the state are represented. I love exploring Texas towns and areas. All good recommendations with the exception of Port Arthur - I agree with the poster about that one. Unfortunately, Galveston won't be back up and running well again for a long time since it was blasted by IKE. Funny how that got almost no media attention.
One of my favorites, although it's sorta off the beaten path, is Waxahachie, just south of Dallas on 287.
In the early spring - the most scenic part of Texas is going to be East Texas - The Tyler Azalea Trail , it's just gorgeous - nice towns in East Texas, well worth a visit.

I've been to Clyde TX a bunch of times from 2001 to 2004, including the downtown area, I-20, South 1st Street. I've must have missed something. Let me know what's there, I'd like to see it. I enjoy looking at small town things and places.

If you can't eat BBQ you're on the wrong diet!

Eat coleslaw or carrot salad instead of potato salad and pick leaner cuts of meat (dry in bbq lingo)

Round Top - pop 77 (between Brenham and La Grange on Hwy 237): Founded 1821 Joel Robinson who captured Santa Anna was from RT - , colonial times had 500 pop. Go to a concert at Festival Hill - www.festivalhill.com $25 or Univ of Texas Winedale Shakespeare performance $10 - visit the dozens of restored buildings from 1820s to 1890s on ten acres at Heinkle Square $5 - eat at the Round Top Cafe $10-24, mentioned in Newsweek OR The Oaks for local people $8-15, have a drink at the Wine Shop and mix with the locals, often a band playing. Three art galleries, all free to enter. Cigar Shop is fun. The Lutheran Church has an organ with cedar pipes. See the restored Hope Lutheran Church which is the Library with a playground for the kids.
Second choice is Fayetteville - authentic square: wooded facades. Entire 250 pop. town is Historic District and cute. Dine at Keilers, order the catfish.
